Yea that must be what I saw, they were filming at the time so I wondered if it were to spread the destruction so the enclosure didn't look as bare or to force them closer to the cameras. I wonder if the binturong will go on show soon?

Do you think it would be beneficial to start the mix now rather than the stress of that on top of a new enclosure?

 

The council have now approved the plans for the new enclosures within Islands, so hopefully work should be able to start soon (probably after the summer holidays)

 

Now I have to ask which council has approved the plans and for which enclosures?

 

Cheshire west and chester, and the sunbear/tapir enclosures

I have my doubts. Would the old tiger enclosure be escape-proof for binturongs? Is the indoor accommodation sufficient for both the bears and the binturongs?

When will the New Work Start on the New Enclosures on Islands? What do you think that the Old Tiger/ Sun Bear and Old Tapir Enclosure will House Next?

Also What Species of Birds will There Be in the New Aviary?

Right so the plans that everyone knows about then.

 

Not until the main season is over,so sometime after October.I suspect both enclosures will be knocked down.

Any thing as long as its a Passerine and it comes from South East Asia

I haven't read that recent link so excuse me if I'm repeating something here.
The Sun Bears are to be temporarily housed in the empty Jaguar enclosure and already have signs up for them in there.

Ooh and I finally saw the Macaques outside, pretty much most of the afternoon when I passed by. Did they have 2 recent births?

 

What's the reason for moving the sunbears to the jaguar house? Has any work begun on their new enclosure?

 

To give them more space than they've currently got in the old Tiger enclosure. They can separate them in the Jaguar house if needed as well without having one locked in the offshow dens

 

Not yet, but they will start construction before the end of the year.

 

to be honest I dont think a new sun bear enclosure is needed. I dont see why they cant stay in the jaguar house permanently as it is a good enclosure for them.

Once the bears have moved out of their current enclosure what will go in there or will be be demolished?

And also how many orangutans are at the zoo?

 

Well, the Islands enclosure will be purpose-built for bears, rather than repurposed from big cat enclosures, but the main driver is probably simply because the Islands area is South-east Asia-themed and the area around Spirit of the Jaguar is South America-themed. The press release specifically stated they are pushing to move more Asian species from the main zoo into Islands.

 

There are 13 orang-utans at the zoo at the moment; 6 Bornean and 7 Sumatran.

Bornean wise there is elderly male (with cheekpads) Tuan, young adult male Willie (minus cheekpads), elderly female Martha, her two adult daughters Sarikei and Leia, and Sarikei and Tuan's adolescent son Iznee. When I last visited, Tuan was living on his own (and will be doing so permanently now, I think he's been retired from the breeding programme), Martha with Leia and Willie with Sarikei and Iznee. These six live in Realm of the Red Ape with a pair (1 male, 1 female) of lar gibbons.

Sumatran wise there is adult male (with cheekpads) Puluh, adult sisters Emma and Subis, Emma and Puluh's subadult daughter Indah and infant son Tripa, and Subis and Puluh's infant daughter Tuti and baby daughter Siska. These live in one group (at least they were when I visited last) in Islands with a family of three silvery gibbons (mum, dad and baby).

So the orangutans can be summed up as:

Bornean orangutan = 3.3 (Tuan Willie Iznee, Martha Sarikei Leia)

Sumatran orangutan = 2.5 (Puluh Tripa, Emma Subis Indah Tuti Siska)
