I think Narus was a bit of a pain, but when I asked about the move, the keepers said it was just studbook/genetics as to why he went instead of Murchison etc. They said as far as they know, he's doing well with all his ladies.

Guess it could be either really, I thought he had calmed down after Kidepo was moved out? It seems a bit weird if it was studbook/genetics as if Kidepo had already moved on then surely that would make Narus less valuable than Murchison or Sanyu? Given that Kidepo and Narus are brothers and I assume have the same genetic value? I know all the boys have the same father but surely they would want to increase genetic diversity unless Dagmar/Tula have over represented genes (I am not sure on their relatives in other zoos as it is fairly difficult to find records of individuals). This likely doesn't mean anything as all the boys will move on eventually to breed but it's just speculation.

On another note has Kanzi got a name plate on the wall yet? Last time I visited we counted ten giraffes but only nine names on the wall and we were convinced we were seeing double! It caused a fair few arguments on the way home.

Yes unfortunately they have detected the EEHV virus in Indali, they are hopeful as they have caught it very early, but still very sad news.

Dreadful news, hope she pulls through. I wonder if they could try a transfusion from an elephant that has managed to survive the virus? I am sure there have been a few just can't think of any off the top of my head? Not sure if Esha (now at Blackpool) managed to fit it off?

Is there the potential this disease is hereditary? I’m not properly read up on it but every calf since the early 2010’s have caught this and died, it’s not a coincidence, Chester’s heard has been decimated, maybe it’s bad luck, or maybe there is something more to it.

I've never heard of a hereditary virus, and if I understand the biology properly, infection would be directly from elephant to elephant.

It's possible a trait can be passed on from mother to child, which makes individuals more susceptible to the virus, as most elephants Cary the virus, like humans. But went effected the same.

I could be wrong but i believe Tarli at Woburn has survived through this, so everything crossed for Indali. It will be a huge step forward if she can, stay strong little one

The elephant house was back open today, Aung Bo was out in the main paddock.

Is the Madagascar area really a dead end? Seems really poorly thought out and will be horrible in summer busy day.

If you look at the aerial photograph of Chester Zoo in our Maps section, Islands is at the southern end of the zoo's land as far as the A41 main road. The Savannah area is supposed to be next to Islands, alongside A41 again, as far as the two roundabouts where traffic goes from the main road to the Park & Ride car park (to catch buses into Chester city centre) and the zoo's car park.
