First look at the zoo’s new warthog pair. They are currently in the elephant barn but won’t be on regular viewing until Water’s Edge is completed this summer.

I think you're right, it is Malaika.

13 year old mountain lion, Motega, was euthanized yesterday after battling with kidney disease.

An update about the Water’s Edge exhibit construction. In the video, it is revealed that there will be a large rock over the penguin pool that will occasionally dump a large amount of water and literally “make waves” that the penguins and guests will be able to enjoy. A really unique aspect of the exhibit!

I love the wave machine that’s going into this exhibit, that’ll be truly unique. I’m a little concerned about the walk through section of the habitat, having worked with African Penguins (and the scars that they can inflict) I think CMZ is opening themselves up to some angry guests unless they are only in the same space as the penguins when a staff member is present. I’ll be interested to see!

It’s an AZA regulation that contact areas are monitored by a staff member when open.

Realy a nice idea that wave-machine but surtainly not unique. Weltvogelpark Walsrode ( Germany ) has it already since the 1970s in their beach-wader aviary :).

Just watched a video of that wave pool. Super cool! It sounds like the one at CMZ isn’t always going to be on and the waves will be occasionally caused by water falling from a large 15ft rock. I have a feeling that it may cause a fun slight overflow effect over the acrylic and into the viewing area which is definitely unique.

Can you post a link to said video? I'm curious as to what it looks like in action!

I do not like the Denver zoo as much as I did a few years ago. The new exhibits makes it feel very crowded. I will visit when I’m in Dever. There are some good exhibits. I just don’t like the newest ones.
I will go to CMZ every chance I get. Mountain tapir and moose are my favorites.

I'm glad I've gotten to see moose in the wild numerous times.

Baby black howler monkey was born on Tuesday to first time mother, Charlie. Both are doing great and are on exhibit.

Added some pictures to the media section of the Scutes Family Gallery with some commentary. The exhibit was the subject of some recent debate on another thread and some users requested updated photos. Don’t really want to debate the matter any further here or elsewhere on the forums but I’m open to answer any specific questions in the comments of each photo.

African elephant, Malaika, was discovered early this morning laying down and unable to get up. A life threatening condition if not treated. She was assisted up with the help of zoo staff and local fire departments and is doing better. I am linking the zoo’s Facebook post and a video of the staff assisting her back to her feet. Fascinating if you’ve never seen it before. The zoo’s elephant barn has a heavy duty crane built into it to assist with these situations when they happen as it is essential to get the elephant up ASAP.

Oof. Fingers crossed I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if she's still alive this time next year. It always seems to be that once an older (or even middle aged) elephant goes down and needs to be hoisted up, they generally aren't long for this world, sadly.
