    9 species of invertebrate
    3 species of fish
    56 species of mammal

All together, that is 150 unique species. They may not all have dedicated exhibit space, but almost every species is viewable to guests either through shows or exhibit rotation. With the addition of the new Making Waves exhibits, the zoo will be close to returning to their 170 species number that they had before renovations started. A final species list for that exhibit is still not available but confirmed "new" species include Nile hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius) and African penguin (Spheniscus demersus). The exhibit will feature more species but those are the only 2 hard species that are not subject to change. Other potential species include a species of gazelle, a lemur species, and multiple bird and fish species.

Thank you for this list! It is easier to read than my current format for species lists! I hope to visit this zoo, I visited Colorado Springs in 1999 but did not know there was a zoo there...or if I saw an ad for it, assumed it was ramshackle. Is the Mountain tapir exhibit nice? The housing for that species in Los Angeles is a rather bleak oval pit essentially.

It has changed drastically from 1999. Since then, they added African Rift Valley, Rocky Mountain Wild, a snow leopard exhibit in Asian Highlands, Encounter Africa, Australia Walkabout, Scutes Family Gallery, The Loft and the tapir exhibit. The Amur tiger exhibit is one of the more naturalistic in the country and is far better than Denver's even though Denver's is about 20 years newer.

As for the tapir exhibit, it was previously the African lion exhibit before being renovated. The tapirs were previously housed in a small hoofstock yard between the old elephant exhibit and the old okapi yard. When the elephant building was demolished in 2011, the old Lion's Lair exhibit was emptied and the new lion exhibit was built in the Encounter Africa expansion. Unfortunately, the tapirs were held off exhibit for about 4 years while funding was raised to renovate Lion's Lair. In that time ground hornbills occupied the exhibit. In 2015, the exhibit was finally renovated for the tapirs.

It has a grotto feel to it but the tapirs access both the upper and lower levels. The levels connect on one side of the exhibit with a waterfall and stream running from the left side to the right going to the lower level ending in a decently sized pool. Also on the left side, there is a training fence that allows keepers to have safe access to the tapirs for scheduled chats and VIP experiences for guests (this is where my profile pic was taken). The exhibit is decently planted on the sides and in the middle with large trees that have been there for years even when it was the lion exhibit. Unfortunately, I don't have a decent image of the whole exhibit but I'll try to remember when I work next to take some and I'll upload them as I think it is way better than LA's exhibit and is one of my favorites at the zoo.

How big is the current population of mountain tapir left in the country?
(I believe more or less LA Zoo was the mainstay?

Last I heard, 4.1 at LA and 1.1 at Cheyenne. After visiting LA yesterday I can confirm at least 3 are still present, but any other individuals were behind the scenes and not visible from the public path.
