Here's the timeline and summary of 2016. A full, updated species list will be posted in December of this year.

2016 was something to be considered an all around roller coaster of a year. It was filled with disappointments: not too many new species were placed on display as there usually are every year, this was the first full year in a long time without there being a Sumatran Rhinoceros at the zoo, a gorilla was shot and killed, and Hippo Cove started an outrage to many despite the exhibit being hyped since 2007. Luckily the large number of zoo babies with many attraction seeking animals made up for some of this to keep the year alive.

    Timeline:

January: A little blue penguin was born and was later named Bowie --- It is announced that the zoo would soon receive two new Malayan Tigers, a male named Jalil and female named Cinta --- Sarah, the world's fastest known cheetah, dies --- Abigail, a former resident of Manatee Springs, was released into the wild

February: It was announced that Saari, the Bactrian camel, is pregnant for the third time --- Ali, the aardvark that was once exhibited in the Children's Zoo gave birth; the calf did not survive --- A potto, named Otto, was born --- It was announced that the zoo would receive a male sloth (who ended up being a female) for their female (who ended up being a male) to breed; the exhibit was also renovated --- It was announced that the zoo would replace Harapan with a tapir from the Sedgewick County Zoo (didn't happen)

March: Berit, a polar bear, escapes their exhibit and was free to roam behind the scenes area; none of the bears actually had any chance of going out to the public --- Five cheetahs were born at the off-site breeding center; they were immediately transferred to the zoo's nursery --- It was announced that the mother of the cubs died a few days after giving birth --- A Steller's Sea Eagle hatched --- The smallest of the cheetah litter dies

April: A cheetah cub from Oregon, also an orphan, was transferred to the zoo to live with the other cubs --- The white tiger exhibit opens again after minor renovations --- Another cheetah cub passes away --- It was announced that the tapir from Kansas would no longer be coming to the zoo (died); instead, Walter, the warthog has replaced Harapan --- The rhinoceros hornbill from Wings of the World, arguably the most notable animal in the building, was transferred to the Palm Beach Zoo

May: It was announced that CeCe and Jambo, two of the zoo's female giraffes, are pregnant --- It was announced that three of the zoo's female painted dogs would be transferred while they would be receiving two males --- The only crowned guenons in the hemisphere from Gorilla World are moved to Jungle Trails to replace the lion-tailed macaques --- The zoo constructed many overnight purpose tents that are set on the side of the giraffe exhibit for zoo campers --- The zoo makes the decision to no longer have keepers in the exhibit with their elephants at the same time --- The first flamingo hatches --- Striped skunks were born --- Two golden-headed lion tamarins are put on exhibit in Jungle Trails, replacing Francois langurs (taken off exhibit a long time ago) --- A second flamingo hatches --- Harambe, the silverback gorilla of the zoo's second group, was shot and killed after he investigated a three year-old boy that fell in the enclosure --- The zoo's Siberian lynx passes away (Was replaced with Eurasian eagle owls)

June: White-faced sakis, a new species to the zoo, is put on exhibit in Jungle Trails; replacing ruffed lemurs --- Gorilla World opens on June 7th after the incident; railings in Gorilla World are replaced (in the future, front fences for the bears, wolves, orangutans, white lions, white tigers, zebra, and black rhinos were also renovated in response to the incident) --- Manjula, the zoo's female Indian Rhino was moved to the first exhibit in Rhino Reserve while Shewa, the zebra took her exhibit --- The banded palm civet in Night Hunters was moved to the bat-eared fox exhibit (also in NH and replacing them) while a screaming armadillo was moved into the civet's exhibit - The koi in the former, inaccessible Oriental Garden were removed to make room for a giant salamander (did not replace them immediately) - A grey crowned crane is moved to the empty zebra yard --- The zoo completely constructed a new tank in the Reptile House and an eastern hellbender took its place --- The zoo received Henry and Bibi, Nile hippos, for the opening of Hippo Cove

July: The zoo received two male painted dogs --- The oldest tree at the zoo, a 200 year-old red oak was blown down after a storm --- Hippo Cove opens on July 21st, the first time the zoo had hippos since 1997 --- It was announced that an Andean condor chick hatched --- CeCe gave birth to her first calf; later named Cora --- The kea flock is taken off exhibit for renovations

August: Capuchinbirds are placed on exhibit in Jungle Trails --- Twix, the new sloth arrival, dies --- It is unofficially announced that there are pregnancies involved with the black rhinos, okapi, painted dogs, and hippos

September: The zoo receives a bomb threat and the park is evacuated --- Jambo, the second pregnant giraffe, gave birth to another female; later named Zoey --- The zoo officially announces that Seyia, the female black rhino, is pregnant

October: It was announced that a Yellow-backed duiker was born in August --- Two pygmy falcons were added to Wings of the World --- It was announced that 12 African Painted Dogs were born on October 16th

November: The zoo received a female polar bear, Anana, from Buffalo for breeding purposes

December: Groundbreaking for the gorilla expansion begins -- The zoo received a male Mexican Wolf -- A tufted deer (formerly located at their private quarters and in Wildlife Canyon years ago) is planned to go on exhibit in Rhino Reserve -- Polar bears, Little One, and Anana were introduced together on exhibit

I moved it, because it was posted in the news thread for 2017. It seems like it would be a lot more useful as a stand-alone thread, considering it is not 2017 news and if people want to know what happened at the zoo during 2016 they can find it easily this way.

Okay, I was just concerned that I was taking up space for something so specific and somewhat insignificant with having a new thread.
