The zoo now has a new silverback, Mshindi, from Louisville.

The last day to see the Gorilla outdoors is October 3rd. For the first time since 1977, in late November, guests will be able to see them indoors year round. The zoo's post did not specify whether or not the Gorillas will be outdoors after the indoor building is complete. With the new indoor access, I guess I see no reason why they be outdoors in the cold like they have in the past.

Both BamBam and Betsy, the manatees, will both be released back to Florida in a couple of weeks. At least for a long time, which can only be since 1999, the zoo has never released 2 manatees at once - separate locations of course. BamBam is 4 and came to the zoo in 2015. I find it odd because Betsy, 26, has been at the zoo since 2010, and has seen many manatees come and go, successfully going through their rehab while she stayed. This is due to the fact that Betsy's mother was reached at the same time she was pregnant with her. I was told since she has no experience in the wild, she would never be returned. Soon, will be taken to Homosassa Springs, where she came from. For the first tint since 1999, this will leave the zoo without any manatees... for s short time.

Henry, the hippo, has died. He was euthanized after he lost all interest in his diet and his weight was drawing him to be incredibly weak.

Behold, the greatest zoo doc/walkthrough. The most notable scenes I recommend watching just for them are the indoor and outdoor elephant baths.

    From the video:

Past & present... Welcome to what I consider my greatest edition of Zoo Tours. No one has ever done anything like this before. In almost 15 minutes, I incorporated the history, the biographies, and the current details of the Cincinnati Zoo's involvement with elephants. I begin with speaking of the most notable elephants of the zoo's past. And at the same time I show how the habitats have evolved from distracting bars that one day became open views.

I have a few updates but the most important one is the aardwolves are off display. Hopefully temporarily.

Victoria crowned pigeons were moved to the Insect Aviary.

Any other changes in Night Hunters? Their collection there is very old so I always wonder when they would get younger animals. Is an armadillo still all that is on display in the old Bat-Eared Fox/Palm Civet exhibit?

No changes other than the aardwolves were made. Other changes around the zoo however, include:
Reptile House: Green tree pythons were moved to the old king snake exhibit, that was closed off for a year. It was completely renovated to look more natural. The Yucatan rattlesnake exhibit is up next and is currently boarded up.
World of the Insect: Day gecko and rough green snake switched terrariums. Giant African millipedes are now on display. I already mentioned the crowned pigeons, which came over from Wings of the World.
Manatee Springs: Amazon milk frogs are now on display in the second terrarium next to the basilisk.
Jungle Trails: Feather tail glider exhibit still empty. Can be seen in the gallery/a tall cage was added in the tamarin enclosure, I assume for introductions.
Wings of the World: Many animals are gone for the upcoming major renovation - closing the building until Spring. Currently the South America, Montane, and Wetlands birds are all gone.

The Aardwolf exhibit is just getting a touch up, as is the clouded leopard exhibit.

The Children's Zoo nursery now also displays Blue Runner Ducks

In Night Hunters, the bobcat exhibit displays a sign that states, "Animal Off display for vacation time in its outdoor exhibit". I'm guessing it's private and behind the building but this is the first time in hearing about it. No, I'm not referring to the outdoor cage across from the memorial.

Having my first look at the new indoor gorilla habitat and it's actuallt quite fantastic. It's actually much larger than I expected, the viewing goes the entire length of the exhibit, it's all naturally lit, it's quite tall, and there's climbing structures all around. A video will be up as soon as possible.

    Here's a short video:
