    1. I just said that because I refer to Asian Elephants as Indian elephants, since Indians make up the majority. 2 No, they have two Indian and two Sumatran. Malaysian Elephants are NOW referred to as Sumatran Elephants. 3. This exhibit will be built as a breeding facility, and I bet the zoo will be receiving new elephants - Indian elephants.

It would be nice if they recieved the other subspecies... Are there other zoos that they can recieve Sumatrans from?

From a possibly outdated source, the only Sumatran(s) displayed outside of Cincinnati are in Belgium and Singapore.

If I remember correctly, Pairi Daiza has Sumatran Elephants, as well as the Singapore Zoo/Night Safari (?)

Most likely from Ringling Brothers or other zoos?

Reports say that Kendi, a one year old black rhino, nipped at a guest during a behind the scenes counter, causing minor injuries to their finger.

As it stands, the only pure Sumatran Elephants outside of range countries are Sabu and Jati at Cincinnati, bull Sang Raja at Kolner zoo, and the breeding group at Madrid in Spain, which consists of breeding bull Valentino and breeding cows Cynthia and Nova, plus their two young calves Vera and Pilar. I *think* Billy at LA might be a Sumatran as well, as his capture location is listed as Malaysia in the studbook, but who knows on that one.

As for sourcing, essentially there is only one effective source at the moment, and that is Taman Safari in Singapore. They have a very large breeding group with several founders contributing to it, and this is where the animals at Madrid originally came from when they were imported into Europe by Berlin and Pairi Daiza. Night Safari does have a breeding group, and this is where Sang Raja came from, however they only have a pair of animals actively breeding, so the potential for getting animals from them is low.

Overall, if Cincy was committed to Sumatran Elephants, they could acquire 2-3 cows, and perhaps a young bull from one of the two breeding facilities and set up a group, however that would be much more cost and time intensive than just getting cows from within North America, most likely from Ringling or African Lion Safari.

See if the exhibit outside of Wings of the World has an inhabitant. Also, find out if the Emus are back in their exhibit.

Most likely genetic overrepresentation, age, etc.
