From what I understand the bears will rotate through all four habitats. Because one is South American and one is Asian, it will not have a location them. They are going in a different direction. I can’t remember what they called it right now.

 

That'll be a bit refreshing. Sticking with the diverse history of the grottos and not feeling the need to stick to regions like zoos tend to do.

 

Will the bears be staying during the renovation or will they be temporarily leaving?

 

Just left Cleveland Zoo. Here's some observations:
African Savannah

• Only saw two rhinos, even checked the indoor exhibit. Do the regular rhinos have access to the new barn? Perhaps they were in there.
• Asian Lantern Festival was unloading in the parking lot by the hospital.

Northern Tier

• How many seals/ sea lions does the zoo have now? There were only 2 sea lions and 1 seal out today. I remember they used to have more.
• Scruffy the Sun Bear was out in her yard today.

Australian Adventure

• Was able to peer into the Homestead (Still closed) through a window. Looks like they took out the animatronic koala and Kookaburra. The TV was still there but they weren't.
• Also spoke to an employee as to why the treehouse and Homestead were still closed despite it being sunny. They said that both were down for minor work right now.

PCA

• Aldabras still missing.
• Construction going on near the old shark exhibits.

 

They had three sea lions for a while. The largest was a male (Mickey, I think) He passed, most likely - he was actually born at the zoo and it's been a very long time since CMZ had any breeding sea lions.

Not surprising about the animatronics (Clancy and Digby - idk why I remember the names.) Well-intentioned relics of a bygone age of zoo design. It's only a matter of time before the entire area stays "temporarily closed" and part of it quietly disappears, especially since nobody seems fiercely nostalgic for anything in that area, unlike the removal of Monkey Island.

For any CMZ visitors in the thread: I'm personally very interested in any Australian Adventure news, rumors, and changes. It's the only section of the zoo that isn't being discussed in the zoo's master plan - but I doubt it's being ignored.

I'd wager the next major project (after Primate Forest, so 2040 - 2050) is gonna be an extensive overhaul of that area. The only elements they'd want/need to keep are the train, camel rides, and petting zoo. Might not even be Australian anymore.

Just spitballing, but the lack of attention coupled with the flurry of activity elsewhere in the zoo makes me curious about what's in store for the nearly 30-year-old area.

I heard from a zoo volunteer Scruffy the sun bear has been moved to one of the exhibits in Asian Highland (the small one that had the former snow leopard cubs in it).

 

Scruffy is not that active at her very advanced years. That exhibit will be fine considering she sleeps a lot.

 

When I was there a couple weeks ago she was in that exhibit. Sun Bear - ZooChat

 

A quick question about Bear Hollow, is the year and a half timeline normal for projects like this? I think Rhinos took this long but I could be wrong

 

Most construction projects take about a year and a half-2 years, tops. Delays may happen (Houston's a prime example with their Galapagos Islands area), stuff's unpredictable.

 

Have the closed parts of Australian Adventure reopened now that schools are out and its officially summer?

 

The biggest change I noticed today was that the lorikeets in Australian Adventure are gone and there are now budgerigars in that aviary (which you can feed with seed sticks). Also crested pigeons...

 

A female black rhino calf was born a couple weeks ago.

She was born on July 9, to Forest and Kibibbi.

 

A piece of 2022 news not mentioned:

On May 18th, the zoo announced that they have acquired (3.0) mini-Nubian goats named Chip, Oscar, and Waffle, which are now in the Australian Adventure area.

A baby Francois langur was born July 16:

The primate was born on July 16, and is the second baby of langur parents Glora and Vinh.

 

She’s been named Dalia! She will also start being on habitat starting tomorrow.

On August 11th, it was announced that the zoo will transfer a (1.0) koala to the San Diego Zoo in the future.
