Depends where the bunny is, what plants it's eating, and whether it's native to that location....though this seems to have taken a sharp turn off the topic of Colchester zoo...
@ Desert Rhino150: while you were in Orangutan Forest on your last visits, did you happen to notice how the orangs were? Rajang will be 50 this year.
I only remember seeing one of the orangutans on my last visit, but the keepers were cleaning out the smaller indoor dens at the time and I didn't go up to view the outdoor enclosure. I think the one that was indoors was Tiga, but he was under a sack away from the glass so I'm not totally certain.
I saw both of them indoors when I was there last (November) and both seemed quite subdued and inactive (maybe they were a bit tired, it was last thing in the day after all) and one of them was just sat there still holding a sponge in his hand (I think it wasn’t Rajang but don’t quote me on it) .
I see. I did think their indoor enclosure was pretty small, and probably not really overly conducive to them being highly active.
It does have an aura of 'retirement home' and, while a huge improvement on their previous enclosure, is probably not the best they could have built. Dear old Rajang is quite happy to sit and poeple-watch, of course!
I believe the enclosure will be properly used to it’s full potential when the zoo can bring in a couple of females to start a breeding group, not wishing anything bad to happen to Raj of course!
There was an incident today at the lion enclosure after a vulture flew in and was attacked by two of the lions. Not sure if it survived.
How did a Vulture get in the Lion enclosure in the first place? I thought the Vultures enclosure was fully enclosed ?
If true, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred at Colchester- an owl met its end flying into the lion enclosure a few years ago. I thought some sort of barrier had been put up to prevent a repeat.....
I too thought there was a net above the enclosure, however there is redevelopment work underway, is there not?
According to the local press the vulture landed on the net and one of the female lion jumped up and grabbed it and pulled it through the net. Obviously shouldn’t have happened but it was a freak accident. I can already hear the anti-zoo people gathering...
How low is the net, if a Lion can jump up and reach it ? Surely that is a massive flaw in its design if true ?
