Today, the new South America house was finally opened to the public. The inside is now designed as an open walkway, where several monkeys and birds roam free around the visitor. Outside, there is an aviary for toco toukan, an enclosure for Geoffroy's cat (also visible inside) and one for venezuelan red howlers, spectacled duck and black-faced ibis. The free-roamers are: Linnaeus' two-toed sloth, golden lion tamarin, white-faced saki (new for the zoo), golden-handed tamarin and silvery marmoset (also new) for the mammals. southern three-banded armadillo are kept separated from the visitors. The birds that were signed (I was lucky to be able to visit the zoo exactly today) were: yellow-rumped cacique, solitary tinamou, northern cardinal, yellow cardinal, crested quail-dove, sunbittern, brazilian tanager and socorro dove. I saw all except for the socorro dove, northern cardinal and quail-dove. Moreover, there is one aquarium with red piranha.
According to ZTL. the white-faced saki has been kept at Cologne Zoo on several occasions and the silvery marmoset and golden-handed tamarin have been kept there before.
Yes, I know that, sorry then my post was probably worded wrong. I meant new species that haven't been there in the past years, and the second remark was only meant for the silvery marmoset, not the red-handed tamarin. And while I'm already correcting myself, the house is not really new, "just" refurbished.
I still think the saki and uakari house was one of the best houses I've ever visited. It contained some monkeys I've never seen elsewhere.
Last Monday I visited Zoo Cologne. Beautiful zoo, quite modern and mostly big enclosures! - giraffehouse, elephanthouse and rhinohouse are all still closed - New South-Americahouse was absolutely beautiful! - The tree kangaroo was probably the highlight of the day! It was mostly sleeping, but seeing the only animal of it’s species that’s not behind the scenes in Europe is very special. - coquerell sifaka’s were very active, as they got fed - The signs at the pheasantery were very inaccurate, and because of covid a part of the pheasantery was not accessible - the duck collection is absolutely terrifying!
Nice to hear you enjoyed your visit. Which part of the pheasantry was closed off? When I visited earlier this month, everything there was open. I don't know. When the weather is ok, the three houses still closed hardly matter in my opinion, since all the animals can be seen outside then, but I don't know if something will change over the next months... Absolutely, I still haven't seen every species on show after a couple of visits, which is in part also due to the missing signage in some places. I'm happy Cologne has so many bird species in general, since the other zoos in the area don't have that much (anymore), at least after Wuppertal lost so many waterfowl species...

Sadly 35-year old male Hispaniolan rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta cornuta) Nepomuk passed away in the Christmas Weekend. He was one of the oldest residents in the aquarium and had lived in the zoo since 1993. He originally came together with other rhinoceors iguanas from the Haus de Meeres in Vienna, which inturn received them from a confiscation. These iguanas had a total of 29 offspring in the zoo and Nepomuk was the last animal of the orginal group. Two years ago a 13-year old female arrived to keep him company. I am not sure whether Kölner Zoo now only has 1 rhinoceors iguana. Source: Instagram of Kölner Zoo (05/01/2022) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYV6rFyIql6/
