The old thread was titled 2016 and was quite long, so I thought it best to create a new thread for the new year. Please begin using this thread on January 1.

Would a mod be able to move all four of the new 2017 news threads into their respective zoo forums...

It is with great sadness that I report that Colo, the oldest gorilla on record and the first to be born in captivity, passed away in her sleep last night at the age of 60.

How sad.... I have been visiting Columbus Zoo at least 2 or 3 times a year (2.5 hour drive from me) ever since I moved to Ohio and have always loved seeing Colo.

This was a big shock to hear, given she had successful surgery just before her milestone 60th birthday before Christmas .

So sorry to all of you Columbus and Colo fans out there to hear of her passing. The zoo has always taken such pride in her life and legacy. She will surely never be forgotten.

It's very sad but I'm glad she lived such a long life and many more baby gorillas have followed

Hopefully knowledge of her long lifespan and excellent care at Columbus Zoo will enable more gorillas in zoos to reach her lifespan in the future.

Sad for the entire Columbus Zoo community on the loss of Colo. I'm thankful that she had a very long life, and will leave an unforgettable legacy at the zoo.

From what I've heard, there are several high-profile births expected in North America in the up-coming months.

Also, the North America staff are currently working on recall training the sandhill cranes (formerly exhibited in the former timber wolf exhibit prior to its conversion to a new bobcat exhibit), so that they can be put out on exhibit with the bison and pronghorn.

I think he means the North American exhibit at the zoo.

@kiang - My apologies; I should have been more clear. Yes, as @pachyderm pro has stated, I was referring to the "North America" region of the zoo.
