Tasmanian devils have arrived but are not yet on exhibit. Facebook post said they will be making an announcement for their public viewing in a few days.

I may be visiting this zoo (as well as The Wilds) in a few days. Any tips for either facility?

Sit as far back as you can in the safari truck. The back seats are parallel to the trucks walls so you can get a wide open view and see just about every direction easily. Just from a photographer's point of view.

Columbus zoo: They have a cheetah run, a show in the african village, and surfin safari show, all are pretty cool to see. If you need time to stop and chill you could catch a show and relax. You can find show times on their website. They also have dinosaur island open currently, they have some animatronic dinos there. Last year it was $3 for dino island. Get there early as its a big zoo and most animals would be more active in the cooler temps. Also they have a bag policy, might wanto to read it before you pack a lunch. Ive seen many people with large backpacks but thats not technically allowed depends on who lets you in whether they will let you or not. Souvenir cups get free refills for the whole day. Havent been to the wilds yet, hope to go soon though.

Updates and thoughts from my visit today:

    • An Asian Small-clawed Otter was born.
    • I saw the Cheetah Ran and it was very cool! I don't think I have ever seen this species do anything more than stand there before.
    • A Markhor was born.
    • According to a keeper, White-crested Laughingthrush and Chinese Bamboo Partridge have been removed from the Asia Quest aviary.
    • The outdoor Leopard yard is under renovation.
    • Lots of firsts! I saw my first Koalas, Feathertail Gliders, Kiwi, Markhor, Pallas' Cats, and others today.
    • The Feathertail Gliders were super active and jumping everywhere!
    • I saw an adorable White-handed Gibbon baby! It didn't look more than a few days old, but I don't know too much about gibbon aging.
    • I liked almost every part of the zoo. The only part I didn't like was the 'Islands' section. The giant dinosaurs ruin it.

    Full species list coming soon!

Did Akron get their Musk deer from Columbus?

No, they only ever had the pair behind the scenes and went out of the species when both individuals were sent to Akron.

What other interesting species do they keep behind the scenes?

Lots, but most have been on exhibit in the past or are duplicates of species on exhibit (eg maleo, lesser bird of paradise).
