The zoo recently released 267 hellbenders into the wild. https://twitter.com/ColumbusZoo/status/1298319311149441024?s=20 A male Masai giraffe was born at the Wilds August 4th. Endangered giraffe born at Ohio conservation center
Because Columbus Zoo shared the update and will likely end up with the calf in the future. Because this thread is much more active than the one for the wilds. Why tell me if you were going to take the link and post it there yourself?
While I understand your reasoning, I agree with @birdsandbats that articles about Wilds news should be posted in the Wilds thread, and vice versa for Columbus. AFAIK it is general protocol for the site, and it helps keep both threads active and clarifies which news applies to which facility. I think asking people to maintain that system is reasonable.
Doesn't really have to do with new things happening at the zoo, but the Wikipedia page has some information that seems false. The page says that in Heart of Africa, lesser flamingos and desert warthogs are exhibited at the Water Hole. I am pretty sure there are no desert warthogs at the zoo, correct me if I'm wrong.
Common Warthog. For some reason warthogs in US zoos get called Desert even though they're not, kind of like the whole mountain coati thing. ~Thylo
When the Warthog was split in two, the "original" scientific name P. aethiopicus remained with the Desert Warthog (as the first-named taxon) and the Common Warthog was renamed as P. africanus. That's why you get the confusion over "Desert Warthogs" in zoos, because they have just changed the common name for their animals rather than changing the scientific name. Totally different to the "Mountain Coatis" though, which was just wrong to start with.
Ah I see, I did not know that aethiopicus was the original scientific name but that makes sense. Thank you. ~Thylo
"Lee’s move to his new home was recommended by the SSP so that he can act as a companion to the receiving facility’s female polar bear." -- from article. It could be possible that he may be moved to a facility with a nonbreeding female since they said he's to act as a 'companion' and not a breeder. However, I agree it would make sense if he moved to a zoo where he could breed this upcoming season.
A female Masai giraffe calf was born August 27: 2nd Masai giraffe calf of the summer born at the Columbus Zoo | 10tv.com The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced Thursday a Masai giraffe calf was born last week in the Heart of Africa region. The calf was born Aug. 27 to 19-year-old Jana, who zoo officials say appears to be strong and energetic. It's the second giraffe birth at the zoo this summer. Jana’s calf arrived almost exactly two months after mother, Zuri, gave birth to her male calf on June 28. Zuri’s calf continues to be doing well and recently made his public debut.
I've heard rumors that Columbus Zoo has tried AI at elephant cow Phoebe again along with a German team. They used Hank's sperm.
In terms of fertility, no. However, Hank is pretty obese and can not reproduce naturally because of this. He just weighs WAY too much to risk him mounting any of their cows.
Here on the Activists' Facebook page: Facebook Groups But the zoo reportedly announced this in a work Secrets of zoo.
