I have a few corrections and updates to that list. 1.) Laura was not alive in 2016, rather, Lala, also known as Lara, was the pregnant female. She gave birth to a calf named Rio. 2.) I remember yokohama have two when I visit in 2016.Did one die? EDIT:Sorry I didn't see the first line you post.
Sky died at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. I'm not going to spam this thread with another updated list. The population in SeaWorld Orlando is expected to be the last, as Ringer was on birth control when she got pregnant, and they separated her from the males for the next few months since she was most fertile immediately after she lost her calf. She is now on birth control and any future pregnancies would be completely by accident.
Nice to know that Toba have a good birth success with this dreamed species! Keep up the good work Toba!
Unfortunately at this point, Commerson's dolphin breeding is at a standstill. SeaWorld has no intention of breeding Ringer, and Stella is probably the last viable female in Japan. There's only four females alive in captivity right now, 1 in Aquatica, 2 in Toba, 1 in Sendai Umino Mori. Chances are the population is functionally extinct in captivity unless Stella has a female calf soon, and that calf survives. That was the hope with Sakura when they sent her to meet Sky.
Possibly. Unless something just goes horribly wrong out of nowhere, Rio and Light should definitely still be alive, Rio is only 2 years old and Light is 3, they live 18 years on average in the wild. The average age at Toba is unknown thanks to Haruka and Liner. Not that many dolphins have actually died at Toba come to think of it. Mostly infant calves in the 2000's, as well as Laura and Liner, who were both well over that average lifespan, Haruka between 1997 and 2000, and Riki sometime in the late 2000's. Riki was the only one below the average age. Toba is pretty good with their animal welfare overall. I'd say we could expect at least Stella to be alive in 2023, even though she'd be 22. Kai would be 26 and Lala would be 32. I doubt Lala would make it that far, but hey, Juan at Aquatica Orlando is at least 35 years old (at least because he was wild caught, possibly as an adult as well).
Then if things go well I still will be able to see the species at least. So many cetacean species absent or soon to disappear from captive breeding programs! :-( If only Japanese aquariums rescue a tiny percentage of the thousands of Dall's porpoises killed in the sea for meat every year :-( :-(
