Well, they might even be pregnant from a mating in Emmen Zoo, so our fingers are crossed ;)

As far as i understood from other zoo-fans in the Netherlands the females that went to Copenhagen were specially kept seperated from Polo to keep them from being transported pregnant. Considering Polo's young are born the last few weeks in Emmen that was probably a good thing...

Very decent Hippo house though! Thanks a lot for the pics...

It looks like an exact copy of the hippo exhibit at Berlin Zoo.

    ^Not really.
Berlins hippo house is more like a big cupol.
    Not this one.

What I meant was that the internal part of the exhibit was similar.

Yeah, we have copied more from their design than the zoo management want's to admit ;). The biggest diffenrence though, is that in Berlin, all kinds of waterfowl have access to the house. In Copenhagen, they wont, keeping it an all african house.

the new hippo house looks absolutely wonderful, is there a large outdoor area and pool, wish some british zoos would bring the common hippo back to more of our zoos, they are a wonderful animal that are now being wonderfully exhibited at copenhagen, hanover, berlin and in many american zoos and a fantastic looking exhibit at werribee.

I thought that you all might like an update on how the hippos are, so here you go:

Polo, Dhary and Loekje have settled in nicely, and are clearly enjoying their new house, splashing about and being very active. I can just stand there and watch them for hours. Polo (the male) is quite easy to tell from the others, as he is almost twice as big as the smallest of the females. Perhaps a Dutch zoofan here at ZooBeat can tell me how to tell the diffenrence between the two females? One of them is quite small at easy to spot, but which one is it, Dhary or Loekje?
    Anyway, here are the photos:

Thanks you two :) Photographing hippos have never been as easy as in this new house. Just stand around for a while, and you will get a lot of chances. They open their mouthes wide frequently, and if you are lucky, that can result in some great pics :D

Yeah, i have a few. I can take some more next time i'm at the Zoo. I will probably start in new thread with some info on the elephant house sometime in the spring. Here are the photos i have so far:

    1) The new house seen from the females' new outoors enclosure.
    2) The far end of the house. Here will be the entrance and a new enclousre for red pandas
    3) The middle section of the house. This is the females' glassdome. The males' is smaller and is situated behind this one.
    4) The other end of the house, facing the females' outdoor enclosure.
    5) An areal picture taken from the zoo-tower. The old red building in front of the glassdome is the old elephant house.

Will there be any other species in the elephant house?

No, there will be one stable for the females and two stables for the males with adjacent outdoor enclosures. It will be a pretty massive elephant theme with lots of exhibitions and education.
