Not been on here for a little while - yes Pertinax, it was the baby sifaka. Officially it was off show but they moved mum to the front room by the end of my visit. I'm presuming everything is going well for them then.

Any news about the rhino birth ?

 

The baby is a male and has been named 'Yousstwo'

Will be visiting shortly and after checking ZTL for an update of species at the collection I have noticed a few changes since the last time I looked at ZTL.


Could someone help with the following species have these left the collection or have they been renamed or taken off show and someone as removed them from the list –

Afghan mouse like hamster
Eastern grey-crowned crane
Grey winged trumpeter
Masia ostrich possibly renamed common ostrich
Mountain peacock pheasant
Scimitar horned oryx
Smooth backed river stingray


Are the following new arrivals or are the jus renamed species


Biak tree monitor
Domestic reindeer
Gidee skink
Oxford sandy & black
Pink backed pelican
Rainbow lorikeet
Southern masked weaver

Could someone help me and give me a location for the following please

European polecat

At least some of those have been there for years - the Oxford Sandy and Blacks I know for a fact have, though I'm not sure if there may have been gaps causing them to come and go from Zootierliste.

If a species just isn't seen at the zoo, the best practice would be to add a note saying so unless it's known for a fact they've gone as things are often just offshow briefly.

 

The SH Oryx are not in the first paddock you drive past on entering anymore , nor did I see them anywhere else. Same for Ostrich. The Polecat I looked for but did not see in its old place- occupied by something else now, so it may have died.

 

Does anyone know if ALL areas of the collection are now open.
Including the tropical house, the pheasant's area and the walk around the wildfowl lake.
Any help would be gratefully received.

A 7 month old Dik-Dik has left the collection, and moved to Wild Place, as part of a new trio there.

 

The SH oryx moved to Marwell 9 months ago due to parasite problems with the paddock pasture. A pair of ostriches remain in the enclosure .Ruby the rhino is due to give birth around Easter.The other adullt female rhino Namcy is due to give birth in August. A pair of Provost Squirrels occupy the enclosure opposite the binturong where the polecats were. All the female agoutis have moved to Woburn Safari Park leaving just two male agoutis with the squirrel monkeys..None are with the Red Ti Ti monkeys. Only the walk through Aviary in the walled section remains off limits due to bird -flu.

 

CWP have bred Chinese Crocodile Lizard
"Cotswold Wildlife Park announces birth of UK's first Chinese Crocodile Lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus) in a zoo.
• This species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
• The Chinese Crocodile Lizard is found only in the cool forests of China and in very small numbers in Vietnam.
• Wild populations are under serious threat from habitat loss and capture for the illegal pet trade. This species is also still widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, since its ability to remain immobile for hours, occasionally days, led to the belief that it could cure insomnia.
• This species gives birth to live young.
• The baby Lizard is currently off-show in the Reptile rearing room. Visitors can see the adults in their enclosure in the Reptile House."

 

Is this definitely a UK first zoo breeding? I seem to recall reading about Chester breeding them, some time in the 80's perhaps?

 

0.0.2 African Crested Porcupettes were born on March 18th.

 

SH Oryx will return to CWP and occupy the first paddock on the right in 2018/19 when parasites are no longer an issue .At present paddock is still occupied by a pair of ostriches .

 

Cotswold are claiming a U.K. first breeding of Chinese Crocodile Lizard. It may well be a first rearing (Chester had young that did not survive) but I have a nagging feeling that it has been done before. Does anyone have any information?

The Scimitar Horned Oryx never came to Marwell.

 

A new Frog House has been opened on the site of the old naked mole rats enclosure.Viewing is only from the outside.it displays Mossy Frogs,Borneo Eared Frogs,Peacock Frogs,False Tomato Frogs,Beatiful Mantella,Yellow and Black Dart Frog,Cinnamon Frogs,and African Bull Frogs.
Ruby the white Rhino still hasn't given birth and the indoor enclosure is still heavily strawed in preparation. The original predicted date was Easter!
