Ajabu! I think that name is very fitting.

22 Texas horned lizards hatched, the second clutch ever at the zoo. The first was last year, and I believe there were 40 then.

Soon there will be two elephant statues near the giraffe statue in front of the zoo.

According to the LA Zoo's Animal Transactions, 1.0 Nile hippo has arrived from LA. His name is Adhama, I believe.

Hippo Adhama will be joined by female Boopie from Albuquerque Biological Park for breeding if all goes according to plan.

Thanks. Any info about the third animal (another female) that is supposed to be coming to Dallas? Or is the exhibit just going to start with two?

As far as I know it will just be the two, at least for the time being.

Adhama is a great guy. He got along great with his daughter Rosie while in LA.

I just got home from the Dallas Zoo. Not sure why they're getting the hippos right now, the exhibit is a long, long way from being completed. There is no hippo holding as of yet, and most of the exhibit is still mounds of dirt.

One a good note, one of the Swazi Elephants was on exhibit today with 2 of the original heard (Congo and Kamba). Congo and Kamba are small individuals, but the Swazi animal was tiny compared to those two.

They were introducing a heard of Scimitar-Horned Oryx into the Arid Desert exhibit. Aoudad and Nubian Ibex now share the Mountain exhibit. No sign of Somali Wild Ass. Three Red River Hogs share an exhibit in the Bush habitat with 4.0 Nyala. River habitat is still very depleted as far as species go (4 species of birds total, I think). A Hartmann's Moutain Zebra is on exhibit in the Woodlands habitat with 0.2 Eland (I think 1.0 Eland was off exhibit).

In the Savanna, the loss of the Impala is greatly lessened because there are now 5.0 Nile Lechwe on exhibit with 1.0 Greater Kudu. There are no zebras of any species in sight.

Thanks for the updates. Could it be possible the hippo(s) are currently being held in the old Hill area? Didn't there used to be a hippo exhibit back there?

Aoudad are old news (they're the Kordofan subspecies) but it's good news about the red river hogs. It was a bit weird that they were on the sign but not on exhibit, especially since the zoo already had some. Since when does the zoo have 1.2 eland? When I rode the Monorail they had 0.3.

Were secretary birds back in the main exhibit (mixed with vulture, gazelle, gerenuk, etc.) or still on their own?

Have white-naped cranes gone on exhibit yet near the tigers?

I've seen pics of a male Eland on the zoos FB page.

The hill only ever held rhinos.

The big Bush exhibit had 1.1 Gerenuk, 1.0 Thomson's Gazelle, 1.0 Lesser Kudu, Secretary Bird, Marabou Stork, and I think one or two other birds (perhaps more Lappet-Faced Vultures). The 3rd Bush exhibit is still not used at all.

    Thanks, wasn't sure, I haven't seen it.

Ok. A few months ago the secretary bird (s) was/were moved to the smaller one in the back because the marabou storks were nesting. Glad to hear that they're closer again, but it's not like I'll be able to go photograph them anytime soon.

So, the aoudad are purebred. Any historical info on their origins?

Yes, but the Hill was not the large mammal building. Totally separate areas.
