For people who want to join the Opossum club, there is now a new opportunity:

Gray short-tailed opossum are now on show in the Amazonia house. A male is on show and a female with youngsters is kept behind the scenes.

And this makes three collections I have visited this year to subsequently get opossums :p

Thankfully I finally saw Virginia Opossum earlier this month so it doesn't sting quite so much!!!!

Some news after my 3rd visit for 2019 yesterday:

    - there´s a first breeding success with the new couple of kinkajous in the Tamandua house, one Little kinkajou was born at the end of last week.
    - There is also offspring of seriema, Eurasian avocet (in the new aviary for Ibisses and roseate spoonbills), silver pheasants, white storks and "Husumer protest pigs" (domesticated pigs).
    - New species are a female lowland tapir, a female six-banded armadillo, a female siamang and a male capybara.
    - The new enclosure for masked palm civets was opened last week
    - The a.m. walk-trough aviary is now home for scarlet Ibis, roseate spoonbill, Eurasian avocet, inca tern, rosy-billed pochards and Peruvian thick-knee.
    - The lion-house itself seems to be finished, unfortunately, it will took some more time to finish the outdoor enclosures.
    - The old parrot breeding aviaries along the enclosure for red giant kangaroos have been demolished and the remaining birds (one Ecuador amazon and one red-fronted macaw) moved to the old hornbill aviaries, next to the red pandas.
    - There are no more green iguanas kept in the zoo, the last female moved into the Tropical houses of the nearby Rombergpark.

The zoo's last Spectacled bear was put to sleep last Friday due to health related problems because of old age. The bear was born in Tierpark Berlin in 1995. Dortmund will not keep bears until the current bear enclosure is extended and remodelled, which should be done in the coming years. Afterwards Spectacled bears will once again be kept.

Hi, I will be visiting Dortmund zoo in nearly days and I have one question.

I'm curious about tiger cats. I'm working on my photographic project about wild cats' family - it will be displayed as exhibition so I would do my best and I wonder if there is a chance to photograph the species in Dortmund, especially the family. Are they on-show? Is the gap between an enclosure and path very wide?

I will have 2 days there. I'm thrilled and decide to ask. I saw the photo of enclosure here and I don't know if I should have a hope however I still do :p

They are indeed on-display and are, as I recall, reasonably easy to photograph as long as they are in their outdoor exhibits.

Thank you! In polish I would say that it sounds like a honey on my ears, however I will just say that it sounds nice and a little bit challenging ;). Could their enclosure be compared with outdoor of Prague's tiger cat exhibit? Or Usti nad Labem's Geoffroy's cat?

I haven't seen any information posted in this thread about this news so thought I'd add this as an update.

A giant otter named "Macau" was recently sent to the Brazilian National zoo of Brasilia from Dortmund zoo apparently arriving a couple of days ago.

Here is a newspaper article regarding the story :

On Dec. 18 a female Giant anteater was born to female Zenobia snd male Antebus. For both animals this is their 3th young,
This young is the 64th Giant anteater to be born at Dortmund but the first one of the last 10 years. Because the holding-spaces in Europe were all in no need of Giant anteater, the EEP-keeper ( which is Dortmund himself ) put a breeding-stop on the species but now obviously some places are again avaible :).
