    2 nice recent breeding-results at Dortmund :
    - 2 Black vulture eggs were placed in the incubator because the parent-birds had already broken several eggs in the past and both chicks hatched and are now raised by hand.
    - On Oct. 27 last year the female Chiapas giant musk turtle laid a clutch of 4 eggs. 164 days later - = last week - one young hatched :).

I score both breeding successes evenly.

Just I am equally well chuffed with 2 black vulture chicks: That really does not happen very often!
I wonder whether the Dortmund pair has had any breeding success in the past. Cannot recall this ... BTW: also if and when both chicks pull through a great asset for Vulture Foundation and Rewilding.

Don't think they gonna be part of the Vulture Foundation and / or Rewilding programma, they are American black vultures...

Some other info from my home zoo:

    - the refurbished lion house and outside enclosure is heading to completion
    - the new aviaries for small parrots and conures (they are replacing the old parrot breeding aviaries) are ready and temporary home for the Australian doves, budgerigars, cockatiels and other birds during the new building of their old aviary, which will be a walk-through, as soon as it´s ready.
    - After old female "Gambela" (*1997) was euthanized, there´s only 1,0 Angola giraffe "Zikomo" left.
    - There were some first breedings this year, including the (already mentioned) spectacled owl, guira cuckoo and red-crested turaco
    - The pygmy slow Loris enclosure inside the Orang and tapir house was enhanced
    - New species are masked lapwing and Germain´s peacock pheasant
    - The last coati was given to another zoo, so the refurbishment of the spectacled bear enclosure could start soon.
    - Mentionable breedings were white rhino "Willi", the already mentioned kinkajou, three capybaras, a southern pudu and another southern oncilla (0,1)

Sad news from Zoo Dortmund, the Southern white male that was born last year has been euthanized. He surprisingly fell ill with colicky stomach pains on the afternoon of March 22nd, he received intensive veterinary treatment until late into the night of March 23rd. However it was clear that he wasn't going to recover, therefore the decision was made to put him to sleep. An investigation will be caried out to determine the exact cause of the severe colic.

on facebook the offical spoke person explained that they stop the husbandry of the angolan subspecies of the southern giraffe and switch to the kordofan subspecies of the northern giraffe that is kept at only one other german institution and almost exclusive to the french speaking part of europe

I also wanted to point out that the Zoo Dortmund has a very nice social media presence with daily updates.
Pretty every single change and event in the collection is shared thru well written texts that explain in detail the situation of both the species in general and specimen at the zoo.
Rarely have I ever seen a page that expressed the passion so much like theirs.

Recently another female (*2018) kordofan giraffe arrived from Basel Zoo, where she was born. The other female that arrived earlier this year came from Zoo de La Flèche, to prevent hybridization the male's reproductive capacity is suppressed by means of regular vaccinations.

IT would be best to road transport the male to SW Europe and not be stuck in a timeline for years on end. Kordofan giraffe have a far higher conservation value.

Recently 5 Yellow-footed tortoises (Chelonoidis denticulatus) hatched. According to zootierliste Dortmund used to breed this species, would this be the first time since x years that this species has bred succesfully again?

Recently a male South African bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis megalotis) arrived from ZooParc de Beauval, where he was born on the 11th of May 2020. He will live together with the 5-year old female that already lives at the zoo, hopefully they will breed!
