On the 29th of June female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) Nixe became mother for the second time. She gave birth to a female, who was given the name Luna. The zoo now has 1.4 sea lions.

Recently a new species arrived at the zoo: a pair of Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus). The 9-year old male Paco came from Eddy Even, a crocodile expert and former zoo keeper at Dierenpark Emmen (Zoo), who is also a member of the IUCN Crocodile Specialist Group. The 35-year old female Ella came from Tierpark und Fossilium Bochum. They can be found in the former enclosure of the Smooth-fronted caimans (Paleosuchus trigonatus) in the Amazonas-Haus.

Additionally, tamandua male Hugo has left the zoo and arrived at Zooparc Overloon /NL. He was born at Parken Zoo/Sweden in 2015 and had been in Dortmund since 2017. In exchange, the zoo has gotten a new pair of tamanduas to hopefully start breeding again, but no infos are given (yet) where they are from. The female however is apparently related to Hugo, this is why he left, according to Facebook.

The zoo has posted an update about the ongoing construction work today. This includes:
    - New restrooms will be build as the ones next to the maned wolves are being demolished, since new stables for the mixed south american exhibit will be built in their place
    - This means the maned wolves will temporarily move behind the scenes
    - Construction on the new seal exhibit will start soon. The seals will temporarily move to the giant otter outdoor exhibit, which will (luckily) be made bigger and deeper beforehand.
    - The last giant otter has left the zoo, but the species will return once the seal enclosure is done and return to their then-refurbished exhibit
    - The "Zoofreunde", a group of supporters of the zoo, are building an exhibit for fennec foxes inside and outside of the giraffe house, there is an option to donate for it
    - There is also some smaller stuff mentioned like a new kiosk. Nothing really new about the other construction sites.

While I'm happy that so much will hopefully be done soon, it's a bit sad that nothing is finished or close to being finished right now. There is still no date or anything given for the lion house for example, and with all the construction work and some COVID-restrictions, the zoo itself admits that about half of its animals cannot be seen at the moment...

The new tamandua pair has arrived and is already on-show (at least in the outside enclosure), the male came from Zlin/Czech Republic (* 2010 in Belén de Escobar/Argentina), the female from Parken Zoo/Sweden (*2017), which means the female belongs to the subspecies straminea, according to ZTL.

Unfortunately, the young sea lion has recently died. It seemed healthy in the morning, but its health rapidly declined and the vet could only find it dead. The cause of death is now being investigated.

After a small delay of, I'm not sure anymore, two years I guess? - the refurbished carnivore house is finally finished. Three lions will be kept there, two females came from Erfurt and a male from Kerkrade (male still behind the scenes). As far as I know, the interior is still closed off for visitors together with all other animal houses.

To be honest, I have to see it in reality, but judging from the pictures posted, it doesn't look overwhelming, especially considering the long time it took. The old tiger enclosure basically looks the same, isn't really big and consists of 75% water, I had hoped they would make the land part bigger. I don't really know why they chose lions over tigers under those circumstances, which would have at least used the water portion of the exhibit...

From Antwerp/Belgium, the zoo received a still nameless female pygmy slow loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus), which was born in Planckendael in January 2020. The exhibit has been expanded recently, and they hope to have better chances of breeding now, because the current pair hasn't breed in the three years together. The new female is somewhat related to the present one (2nd degree niece), but the male is born in the wild and has been smuggled illegally to Germany on a plane, so I figure his genes are valuable for the EEP.

Recently 45 shell parakeets (Melopsittacus undulatus) were released into the aviary, which has now been reopened. Interestingly the instagram post mentions the same species being kept as the quoted message, but instead of 2 only 1 Wonga pigeon is mentioned.
