A Tokay gecko has been born in the reptile house. It's currently off show and being reared by keepers but they are hoping to return it to the reptile house in the coming weeks.

Surely the headline should say 'hatched' rather than 'born' - the sub-editor should read the copy more carefully

 

So if I understand well from your post, born is used exclusively for viviparous animals and hatch for oviparous ones? I was completely unaware of this, and it surprises me a bit. Thanks for improve my English learning

 

Exactly so! Eggs hatch, producing hatchlings. Babies are born - after they have been borne (=carried) by their mothers.

 

A Gelada baboon was born at the Zoo on 25th January - it has yet to be sexed.

A quick question about species from the past does anyone know how many Bison were kept at the zoo and between which years please.
Does anyone have any photographs of the Vulture in the round aviary which used to be just infront of were the Spider monkey and Gelada indoor exhibits are please?

 

I certainly remember there being bison throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. As far as numbers go, I would say around 20. I'm fairly sure that, at one time, they were in the enclosure where the white-lipped peccary are now and I also have a vague recollection of seeing them in the enclosure under the Tropical House, where the Asian lions are now but I wouldn't swear to it. Sorry I can't be more exact about either numbers or dates.

 

They were indeed, with zebra next door in the reindeer enclosure.

 

Bison- in the 1960's they used to be kept in what is now the Lion enclosure. There was a small group of about five. Did they later have as many as twenty...?

 

I'm glad to hear that they were once kept in what is now the lion enclosure and it wasn't just my memory playing tricks. As to numbers, I honestly can't remember exactly, but I'm sure there were more than 5. Or perhaps it just looked as though there were more as I would have been quite young then!

 

The post mortem has revealed that the male Asiatic lion, Jetpur, died from cancer of the liver and spleen.

The final touches are being added to the new extension to the snow leopard enclosure, which will be open in time for the February half-term holidays.

Now been confirmed as a female; the first female gelada baboon to be born at Dudley (the first 4 births were all males).

The new snow leopard extension is complete, and the snow leopards have already moved in.

"We’re continuing to plough ahead with our redevelopment programme to update the site’s enclosures and provide improved facilities for our animals and visitors.

We’ve recently been granted planning permission to start work on demolishing three parrot aviaries and replacing them with a large, single aviary, so watch this space!"

It is situated in the chimpanzee indoor viewing area.
