Pygmy hippo female Tana has been euthanised due to ailing health. She was 42 years and 193 days old. She was born in Dvur where she spent all her life. She now keeps new longevity record for pygmy hippos in captivity. Uhynula nejstarší samice hrošíka na světě: Po Taně zůstalo 8 potomků - AHA.cz
No, that's not the longevity record for a captive pigmy hippo; "Hannibal" (born Copenhagen Zoo; died Stuttgart Zoo) lived to be 50 years old.
A female black rhino calf was born on 13th of December. Father is experienced bull Davu, mother is Molly. Molly is 7 years old and this is her first calf, but she is good mother. She is also trained by keepers and is regularly milked, her milk is frozen for future needs if any calf would need to be hand-reared. The calf with mother will stay off-show for longer time. The zoo prepaires to upgrade one of its rhino houses which has been emptied and so currently no on-show-exhibit is available. The calf will get its name from sponsor next spring or summer. Altogether, Dvur now keeps 14 black rhinos and 6 white rhinos. Source
Dvur keeps sizable number of black rhinos continuously since year 1971 when it imported a 4,6 group from Kenya. Highest number they had at one point was 19 or 20 black rhinos, that was circa 4 years ago. Then they sent several animals for rewilding to Africa and also, their old rhino houses need repairs (done one by one) so holding capacity is temporary decreased.
A female calf of Rothschilds giraffe was born on 23rd December and named Imany. Parents are bull Bořek and cow Imara. This is first giraffe birth after longer break. Dvur Kralove, like many other European zoos, had breeding moratorium due to threatening lack of available space in EAZA zoos. Source
Another male Rothschilds giraffe calf was born on 2nd January to mother Ella and father Bořek. Update on black rhino calves: - the young bull Kyjev that was born in March last year to mother Ema has got a second household name - Eda, which I guess is also his name in studbook. - the cow born in December last year to mother Molly has got a name - Mihindi - the zoo expects another birth in February this year. I dont know the name of expecting mother, several cows come in question.
Two questions regarding Dvur's collection; - are the red-necked gazelles still on rotation with other species? - are the African civets on public display?
Yes & Yes The red-necked gazelles are rotating with Lesser Kudu and Sable. African civets are on display at the Carnivore area.
Thanks. Missed the gazelles in 2018 as there were already moved backstage at the time I came to the enclosure. Are they always out in the morning, or is it more of a random day-to-day decision which animals come out at what times?
Another black rhino calf was born 3rd of March. A bull calf with name Magashi. First offspring of breeding bull Embu that came from Chester. Mother is experienced cow Maisha. Article
In my opinion, Dvur Kralove Zoo is one of the best zoos in the Czech Republic. I am attaching an interesting video as inspiration
I've been looking through Dvur's animal collection on zootierliste and noticed a few interesting species on there. I remember from my visit in 2018 that Dvur does not have its entire collection on display though. Has anyone been there recently and can they tell me if any of the following species are on show/off show? Western reef-egret (Egretta gularis) Chestnut sparrow (Passer eminibey) Black-bellied bischop (Euplectes nigroventris) Rufous-tailed weaver (Histurgops ruficauda) Western bush viper (Atheris chlorechis) Striped house snake (Boaedon lineatus) Black Malagasy cat-eyed snake (Madagascarophis meridionalis) Two-colored skink (Trachylepis dichroma) Yellow-throated plated lizard (Gerrhosaurus flavigularis) Blue-throated agama (Acanthocercus atricollis) Painted frog (Discoglossus pictus) Blue-legged mantella (Mantella expectata) Green mantella (Mantella viridis)
Western reef-egret (Egretta gularis) - on show during warmer months in the walk-through aviary together with hamerkops, lesser flamingos, spoonbills... Chestnut sparrow (Passer eminibey) - off show Black-bellied bischop (Euplectes nigrove) - off show Rufous-tailed weaver (Histurgops ruficauda) - off show (definitely right now, but maybe they will come back during warmer months, I am not really sure if I saw them during last few years, but they were in one of the aviaries next to the Bird house) Western bush viper (Atheris chlorechis) - on show in the Jedovatá Afrika exhibit Striped house snake (Boaedon lineatus) - off show Black Malagasy cat-eyed snake (Madagascarophis meridionalis) - off show Two-colored skink (Trachylepis dichroma) - on show in the Vodní světy exhibit Yellow-throated plated lizard (Gerrhosaurus flavigularis) - No idea Blue-throated agama (Acanthocercus atricollis) - off show Painted frog (Discoglossus pictus) - off show Blue-legged mantella (Mantella expectata) - off show Green mantella (Mantella viridis) - off show
