Their pancake tortoises bred. One freshly hatched baby got discovered by keepers in their exhibit. Two red-and-yellow barbet chicks have left nest cavity in bird house. Two adult pairs of crowned lapwings are kept back stage. Last year they produced 1 chick. This spring 10 chicks hatched. Safari rides start at 29th of April.

New map for summer season on website, with some new and even unfinshed exhibits in West-Cape area - penguins, flamingo aviary (these were open last year), pelican aviary (already open?) and zebra paddock (not finished yet?). There is also icon of spotted hyena, while over (former?) exhibit in carnivore house is icon of stripped hyena... or is it aardwolf?
Pink-backed pelicans are already in their new aviary (saw pics from the weekend). That icon seems more like aardwolf to me but it´s blurry. Stripped hyenas live in safari part, I dont think they will move them into carnivore house.
The map might not be 100% accurate. The civets are actually between the wild dogs and servals. On the map they're drawn elsewhere, where the bat-eared foxes are. (at least this was the situation a months ago)
Red-necked dama gazelle is down to last 0,1 animal. Soon this subspecies will be gone from Europe. A half-grown hippo bull was sent to Dubai Safari. Dvur is the new EEP coordinator for Goliath herons (21 animals kept in EAZA) and for Purple herons (13 animals of two subspecies kept in EAZA). Species on-show in new aviaries in West Cape: - pink-backed pelican - black crowned crane - hamerkop - black stork - spur-winged goose - saddle-billed stork Malagasy giant hognose snake (Leioheterodon madagascariensis) bred and 7 babies hatched. New species - Tunisian tortoise. A male arrived from Prague zoo. It will live in a new terrarium exhibit "Atlas" in Vodní Světy pavilion. This will be a mixed species desert-themed exhibit of North Africa. Source
Interesting update. I'm glad I decided to visit Dvur this year and was able to see the dama gazelles before it's too late. What's the Vodní Světy pavilion?
The new exhibit Atlas is open. Species on show: - starred agama - Tunisian tortoise - ornate spiny-tailed lizard The new "zebra" pen in West Cape saw its inhabitants move in. A group of sable antelopes.
The walk-though pelican aviary in West-Cape is open for visitors. It has also sattle-billed storks (I will try to get full species list). The new hyena enclosure in West-Cape is now home to zoo´s old 1.1 (Barak and Spoty) spotted hyenas, they moved last week. Their former exhibit is empty and will be renovated for another species. The zoo also confirmed their other plans for West-Cape (otters, crocodiles, vultures, birds of prey) are cancelled due to exploding construction costs. A bummer. I looked forward a nice vulture aviary.
Both species were in their import plans for years. So I wont be surprised by any announcement. However I dont see adequate empty exhibits with large pens and flexible separation both outside and inside for brown hyenas anywhere. The old exhibit could be just enought for aardwolf.
@Jana posted on the zoofreunde forum that 6 southern aardwolves were imported from South Africa. The southern (sub-)species seems to have done a lot better in Europe then all East African imports so let's hope this import has a better fate than the previous ones....
Would make a lot of sense seeing as they are kept (and perhaps even bred) somewhat frequently in the private trade here.
Director on his facebook... um... hinted... that aardwolves indeed come soon (or are already there, probably in quarantine for now) But where would brown hyenas come? (I guess aards come into old spotted hyena exhibit in carnivore house... what about browns?)
