1.0 White-rumped shama and at least 1 orange-headed ground-thrush have been added to Brilliant Birds, in addition blue-crowned laughingthrush seem to have returned to the aviary. Lots of activity yesterday from the swift parrots, white-naped pheasant-pigeons (saw them fly for the first time) and the nicobars and imperial pigeons were fighting over the same nesting spot. I was talking to a member of staff who said that the bali starling may have left the collection to be paired up with a male in England, though he couldn't be sure. I also definately saw a white-winged wood duck in the bottom aviary, along with 8 Baer's pochard
From facebook: Giant panda update We will not attempt giant panda breeding this year. Giant pandas can only become pregnant during a short period, usually over a few days in spring. Although the artificial insemination process is routine, it requires a specialist support team and the veterinary guidance at the moment is for vets to respect the social distancing advice and provide emergency care only. These are unprecedented times and we fully support these measures. We will discuss the next steps with our colleagues in China, though it is too soon to say what these may be. In the meantime, you can keep up with Yang Guang on our live webcams, where you may also spot our amazing keepers who are still looking after all our animals while we're closed. You can help care for your favourite animals and save species in the wild by donating at rzss.org.uk/support-us
They wont be doing AI but suspect they will still allow the pandas to mate natural if they can be bothered.
Edinburgh have joined the growing list of Zoo's asking for donations to help with running costs: Can you help? Edinburgh Zoo is currently closed and almost all of our income comes from our visitors and animal lovers like you. Our food bill alone is £55,000 every month, so this is a very challenging time. If you enjoy visiting the zoo and watching our amazing animals on our cameras, please help by giving a donation today. There are lots of other ways you can help too. Thank you ❤️ edinburghzoo.org.uk/support-us/ Edinburgh Zoo
