Will they do something with the SAITO center once the new areas have come up? Replace it or renovate it with a different purpose?

Since I already reviewed Edmonton Valley Zoo on my 50 day, 50 zoo/aquarium road trip thread I uploaded over 60 photos into the ZooChat gallery today. Polar Extremes: Arctic Shores is the shiny new exhibit complex and I uploaded lots of photos of that brand-new area. The city of Edmonton has a million people and it is the capital city of Alberta and yet the zoo receives only 10% of the annual visitors as found at the Calgary Zoo. The city of Calgary has 1.2 million people and 1.2 million visit the zoo each year, and since it is only 2.5 hours from Edmonton I wonder how many Edmontonian's make the trek south to view the very nice Calgary Zoo? I know that I would!

I'll be making a trip out to the EVZ tomorrow, and was wondering if any of you other zoo chatters had anything you wanted pictures or info on ?? If so, just post it here, and I will help to the best of my abilities :)

A female wolf has died at the zoo. The article also mentions some psycho unleasing a dog on their guinea pigs and leaving poisoned oragnes to kill of the pigs the dog didnt find, in 2010. What would make someone do something so sick?

The zoos head vet, Dr. Milton Ness, has passed away. They are now looking for a replacement to help care for the zoo's animals.

Dr. Ness was very involved in the fight to keep Asian Elephant, Lucy, at the zoo. What his passing might mean for her fate remains to be seen.

Sad to hear of his passing. He wasn't quite old to begin with …

During is 7 year tenure he brought big changes and improvements to the zoo, including a completely modernized Veterinary Hospital.

Tundra, a two year old male Arctic Wolf, recently arrived from Amsterdam is now on display with the zoo's seven year old female, Shilah. The zoo isnt expecting pups from the pair given Shilah's age but they said it would be a nice bonus.

they should seriously turn valley zoo into an artic/ antaric theme zoo. Edmonton has the best environment for cold weather animal.

This seems to be the sort of design most zoos are switching to for their maps. Its good, easy to see everything and makes sense. I think the trails are very helpful too. Animal icons would have been handier than a legend though.

I like that map. It is super easy to read and follow.
