Related to the topic of EEHV - when Phoebe gives birth to her calf in Columbus were are going to immediately remove and preserve the umbilical cord. We will be to attempting to catch the virus "live" and the umbilical cord is the best place to the live virus. Hopefully we can learn a thing or two about EEHV from this! Great news on Maliha and Jade!
I noticed that somebody was talking about Emmett at Whipsnade earlier on this thread... Unfortunately 2 of his calves at Whipsnade have also passed away due to EEHV in the past 2 weeks. Donaldson was only 16 months old, and LeeLee who passed away on Wednesday was about 28 months. I was devastated when I found out, I can't imagine what the rest of the herd and the keepers are going through right now...
Sad news about Jade the elephant. It appears she has been affected by EEHV yet again. Virus returns to St. Louis Zoo's elephant Jade - STLtoday.com
