Sad news indeed but I have to say that I am not too surprised about this. This calf was (probably?) born prematurely, had an initial series of setbacks and during his early months was small & thin -looking- his appearance never compared favourably with e.g. Chester's recent calves. A shame nevertheless.

I believe that Herpes was not a cause - just the heart failure mentioned.

    Poor little guy, RIP,

Quite possibly might of been a carrier, and perhaps been affected later in life. His father was Emmet, who has sire many calves that have died from the Herpes virus.

    RIP Ganesh... :(

This has come as a massive shock. We were lucky enough to see him 10 days ago (4th April) he was playing in the pool and seemed to be doing so well.
My condolences to all the staff and other elephants a Twycross. This is such a shame and waste of a life... :(

Very sad news, we went just after his birth and he never seemed a strong and lively calf, still terrible news for the zoo and their hopes for a breeding herd.

This is terribly sad news. I was stunned to hear it. My condolences to the keepers and the herd at Twycross. I only saw the little chap last weekend. As I sat I just can't believe it.

He died of a heart condition, detail as yet unspecified. It's people on here who are speculating as to the nature of this and suggesting it is a long-standing problem. Presumably there will be a PM and the details will become clearer.

Very sad news!! Am totally shocked to hear this. The first time i saw him was when he was exactly a month old, so very small and sweet :(

I wounder how the herd are coping with his loss, especially his mother!? Very sad aswell as he would have been the older playmate to tara's unborn calf. :(

EDIT:The 4th female has now been aloud outside.
