The Washington Post has a picture gallery of the Elephant Community Center, the final component of the Smithsonian National Zoo's elephant complex. It is a renovation of the old elephant house. At the National Zoo, more room for elephants - The Washington Post
Does anybody know the reason, why the zoo stopped keeping Indian Rhinos in 2003 and send the pair to the Bronx and White oak-maybe in preperation for the new elephant exhibit ? I think, the rhinos were housed in the pachyderm builing as well ? And I also guess, thats why the pygmy hippos had to leave the zoo in, which year ? 2010,or 2011 ?A shame, the zoo had the most successful breeding in the states.
The removal of rhinos, hippos, and giraffes was to make more room for the Asian elephants, both inside and outside. However, the old outside river hippo exhibit remains empty.
