Auckland Zoo Elephant on the loose !!

    Ha - great story, wish I'd been there to see it - would have made some great photos !

    True True !!
    But check out Jays website -- Auckland page . You can see photos of the elephants wandering about the zoo -- unconstrained .
    I will check the Auckland papers tomorrow and see if there are any photos of this event .
    Has anyone else had animals escape from their local zoo ?

    Auckland Zoo has had a number of escapes over the years. In the 1920s or 1930s, two leopards escaped. A polar bear climbed the wall of it's enclsoure into the zoo grounds and in 1960, the elephant Jamuna, upon seeing a giraffe for the first time, took off through the zoo picnic area carrying a group of children she was giving a ride too. Nobody was injured.

    Recent escapes include Indra the orangutan (1996), Scuttles the Sea Lion (2001) and Jin the otter (2007).
