    Hi all,

Yes it's the elephant-freak again asking for information on elephants.
This time I'ld like to know wich zoo in Italy keeps or kept elephants.
At the moment my list counts 15 zoos.
Can you confirm the ones I have and complete my list?

    Greetings from the Netherlands,

    Peter

female asian elephant Nelly died two days ago at Bioparco in Rome. She was arrived in 1972. Now the only elephant in Rome is Sophia.

A lone elephant holding in a female with previous contact to others is no good thing ....

I hope before long the zoo management decides that this elephant will leave for an Italian zoo with a group of elderly elephants in order to enable Bioparco to renovate / rebuild the exhibit according to their Masterplan.

Considering there are some lone females in Italy (for example Sabrina at Naples), in the short term it should be more feasible to form a small group of old females in Rome.

I do not think Bioparco is want for much free space. I am convinced some other collections have more legroom for elephants there ...

I hope priority in Rome will be accorded to the orang-utans, as it is frankly a shame that they are kept indoor from circa 2000. There is an Asian female elephant that has been recently seized together with other animals (one chimpanzee, one hippo etc.) in a small 'zoo' and she could be transferred in Rome.
On a positive side, Pistoia Zoo will have a new spacious elephant enclosure having added 7 hectares to the zoo area.

    Elephants in Rome Zoo

    Hi Everyone,

Visited Bioparco de Roma on Sunday and noticed that they have two Asian elephants. Can anyone tell me where the second elephant came from, I'm pretty sure one of them was the previously mentioned Sophia who has been there since 1972.

    Many thanks,

    Hex

The second female is a confiscated circus individual that lived from 2001 to 2013 in Fasano and was moved to Rome after the death of Nelly

Thanks Colobus. The two seemed to be kept apart - do you know if that's just at feeding time?

I think they were unsuccessfull in introducing the two females to each other, at least so far.

It can be very difficult getting females to integrate - and they can fight to the death if they really don't get on (like poor Pugli who moved from the UK to Spain and met her match in La Grande). This can be particularly tricky to manage in a moated facility. I hope they manage to find a way to get them together - there is some hope as I noticed them interacting through the bars when I visited on Sunday.
