Ballarat Wildlife Park now has 6 meerkats.

 

Tasmania Zoo now has 2.1 African Hunting Dogs.

A MISCHEVIOUS monkey had Qantas ground crew hopping when he ran amok in an aircraft cargo hold yesterday.

The pint-sized primate a squirrel size Tamarin monkey, gave his enclosure the slip when baggage in the domestic flight shifted and knocked open his cage.

The tamarin was one of five transferred from an interstate zoo to Hartleys Crocodile Adventures.

His monkey business came to an end when Qantas staff opened the hold and spied the simian stowaway.

Enter Michael Obrien, Harltey’s group operations manager, who climbed into the plan to tangle with the truculent tamarin.

“The ground crew closed the hold and made sure there was no chance of escaping,” Mr Obrien said.

A braver man than most, Mr Obrien remerged with a bitten hand and a new addition to the zoo.

“We had to go in with the hands and came away bleeding,” he said.

“The net would have been too cumbersome.”


Qantas is happy the monkey is safe and sound.

 

Not sure if its a typo, but Wildlife HQ has Black-capped Capuchin.

 

Without looking through the whole thread - have Perth's Ussuri Brown Bears (1980s) been mentioned? Or have they been lumped somewhere?

I have just messaged some zoos, regarding the status of a few of the remnant animals in Australian zoos, and the news I received was not good for some of the species.

Gorge Wildlife Park only has an elderly male left.

Tasmania Zoo only has one 12-year old female Sulawesi macaque left, called ‘Ceda’.


I am not sure when either the female lemur or the male macaque died.

I am awaiting a response from Crocodylus Park regarding their ocelot. Considering that if she were alive, she would be around 23/24 (a world record for ocelot most likely), I think the news wont be good.

 

Its no surprise seeing these and other species imported and breeding only to be phased out a few years later like so many others have in Australian collections over the years the start stop on off again efforts are a joke, it says a lot about the way in which our zoos function

 

The female ocelet at crocodylus park is called Eva. She had a sister named Cloe who was put down in December 2013 because of tumours.

 

I know, I am enquiring about 'Eva'.

 

There was no ocelot visible at Crocodylus park when I visited a few weeks ago and yes, those were the three cats.

 

Australia's last ocelot, 'Eva' has already passed away. I just recieved confirmation from the zoo, however not a date /year.

 

Another species gone in Australia

 

Hi all,

According to the online census and plan, there are now 2.0 Sri Lankan leopards at National Zoo in Canberra.

Also on the regulatory front, there are three species that are currently the subject of proposals to add to the live import list.

These are silvery marmoset, pygmy hippopotamus and okapi. In the case of the latter two, successful amendments to the live import list would not be enough to allow the import of these species as they are not covered by an IRA. Proposed amendments to the live import list can be found here.
