Went today to the small Faunapark Flakkee in Nieuwe Tonge on the Dutch island of Goeree Overflakkee. It´s a small park - about 2.5 hectares - and if I understand right most of the animals belong to privat persons who can put their animals here on display. The animals all belong to commonly seen species and exept the few turtles living in the central pond, only mammals and birds are on show. At the beginning there is a small play-ground and next to this some small pig-breeds are housed. Then a row of large aviaries are the home to a pair of kookaburras, owls and buzards. A small childeren-zoo with donkeys and goats, a duck-pond and an enclosure with some Bennet wallabies ( with at least one albino ) forms the oposite end of the park. A quite small glass-fronted enclosure is home to a small group of Prairiedogs but today they were quite shy and as soon as we appeared, they disappeared ! Some small, quite bad aviaries are the home of several breeds of chickens en in several newer aviaries you can find Blue-and gold macaws, zebrafinches, cockatails, coati's ( only one seen today ) and Prevost squirrels ( none seen ). There are also some larger enclosures with Alpacas, Fellow deer, Emu, White stork and Capybara's. Quite central in the park there is also a row of breeding-aviaries for parakeets but these are not public and difficult to view for the visitors. Walking along a midget-golf area you reach the restaurant and the end of the park. A small park with a very simple collection but if you are nearby and has a little time over surtainly worth a visit.
After a break of almost 2 year ( last visit July 2014 ) I went today to this small park and a lot had changes since that last visit in a possitive way ! Direct afther the entrance a very nice enclosure for Meerkats has been build - new aviary Barn owl - new enclosure Corsac fox - new aviary Zebra finch and Diamond dove - new aviary Kookaburra - a small shed transformed into an Australian info-"center" - new outdoor enclosure Coati - new enclosure Chinchilla - several of the old pouletry-enclosure re-build - new enclosure Prevost squirrel - new outdoor enclosure Raccoon dog - new enclosure Central American aguti - new enclosure Coypu - new enclosure Porcupine - new enclosure Hudson squirrel - new aviary Little owl As a new species there was a sign of the Large-spotted genet and althrough I went back to the enclosure several times, I didn't see them . The door to the indoor enclosure was open so I guess he / she / they was / were inside - hopefully next time ! Photos will be uploaded in the Faunapark Flakee - gallery soon.
Interesting. Have you ever dreamed to have your own zoo, vogelcommando? A zoo such this, small but interesting?
At Faunapark an enclosure is build for the Jungle cat ( still not on display ). Faunapark is the only Dutch collection with this species.
Vogelcommando do you know if the park got their zoolicence? As their first couple of years they operated without having one.

I visited Flakkee today and it's a nice little zoo, a bit comparable to Best or Zie-Zoo. The three Cape genets were the highlight for me, next to the Jungle Cat (last time I saw this species was in the mid-nineties in the now closed Wissel). Slender mongoose and Cuban hutia are no longer kept in Flakkee (or at least not longer on show).
No hutias nor a signage yesterday. Do you know where the enclosure was? There was work in progress at an enclosure next to the coatis, maybe at that location?
Yes the enclosure is on that location and I've just uploaded a picture of the enclosure : Cuban hutia-enclosure | ZooChat
