Seventy Firefighters have been called to a blaze in London Zoos Adventure cafe and shop (near the petting zoo). Fortunately, it seems no injuries, animal or human, have been reported. Appears to have broken out early this morning. Firefighters tackle London Zoo blaze I'm going to assume this means the site will be closed today and likely stay closed until the new year. I don't see them doing any repairs until then.
I hope no animal injuries/fatalities have occurred I also hope no enclosures have burned down if anyone knows anything can you please inform me. My sympathys go to all the London zoo staff and zookeepers.
London Zoo closed after 70 firefighters sent to battle blaze - Sky News Seems unfortunately one aardvark has died and four meerkats are missing
Very sad news. It appears one nine-year old aardvark 'Misha' has confirmed to have died and four meerkats are unaccounted for. 1 staff member taken to hospital and others treated for minor injuries/smoke inhalation. Glad to hear that all staff are safe. Great job on their behalf as it sounds like they evacuated quite a few animals, putting theirselves at risk.
https://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/zsl-london-zoo-statement-23-december-2017 The zoo have announced that they will be open tomorrow. The four meerkats are still missing, presumed dead
One aardvark (Misha, F, 9 years old) dead, they think of smoke inhalation, and 4 meerkats whose bodies haven't even been found. Given that, it's remarkable that the male aardvark (Otto?) and other meerkats are unharmed - really speaks to the bravery and dedication of the very limited overnight staff who live onsite. They've partitioned off a big chunk of that whole corner - in order to stop gawkers you can't get into part of the elevated walkways in the Gir exhibit, pathway is closed off such that you can only get into the Blackburn pavilion by going through the squirrel monkey exhibit. Very concerning in such a new development - I can't decide if I hope it proves to be an accident (so no malicious intent involved) or I hope it's arson (so it's not some massive failure of safety/fire suppression arrangements).
