I took this info from the zoos annual reports. If you don't understand feel free to ask questions.

    2002
In 2000 Chester only had one female Blyth’s tragopan. By the end of 2001 a male joined her. This put Chester in a perfect spot for Breeding. There were 4 male and 2 female satyr tragopans at the begining of 2000 but at the end of 2001 there were 2 males 2 females. 2 of the males were sent to another zoo/zoos
Chester had had a pair of Palawan peacock pheasants for about 7 years now and they breed regurlarly. They also bred in 2002. On the subject of peacock pheasants In 2002 chester also had the malayan and the mountain peacock pheasants both of which aer now longer kept. The pair of Malayan Peacock pheasants died in 2001 probably of old age. There was 2 males, 1 female and an unknown Mountain peacock pheasant at the start of 2000. One of the males and the unknown had died by the end of 2001.
There has been a female argus at chester for some years now. It would be really nice if it could breed with a male from another zoo like San diego or Edinburgh. The argus at Chester shares it’s aviary with the red billed blue pie in the small aviary near the orangs and the Aquarium. Both areas will be or have been renevated.
Of the lophura species Chester has the Edward’s, Vietnamese and the malayan crestless fireback.
Chester bred The vietnamese pheasant, Satyr tragopan and Palawan peacock pheasant in 2002. There was a male and a female born in 2002 of the vietnamese pheasant. Chester no longer holds the species. The satyr tragopan died after less than 30 days.
Before 2002 the Blyth’s and Saytr tragopan were bred. As were the mountain peacock pheasant, Palawan peacock pheasant, Edward’s pheasant, Malayan crestless fireback, vietnamese pheasant, green peafowl and the Congo peafowl.

    2003

Green peafowl bred in 2003 but the female died. This leaves the male that is currently at the zoo and another youngster. The youngster died in 2004.
In 2003 the pair of Mountain peacock pheasants died. Probably of old age.
As there was a spare vietnamese pheasant female another male was brought in to be paired up with her. Sadly one of the females died.
One of the male Satyr tragopans died. This leaves 1 male 2 females.
One of the 3 palawan peacock pheasant males died.

    2004

Chester bred red billed curassows for the first time. At the end of the year there was 1.1.1 at the zoo.
The pair of Blyth’s tragopan moved to another collection/s. The male Satyr tragopan died leaving 0.2.0 at the zoo.
One of the male vietnamese Pheasants died leaving 1.1.0 at the zoo.
The female Edward’s pheasant died. There is only one male at the zoo.
One of the female Palawan peacock pheasants died. There are now 2 pairs at the zoo.

    2005

Palawan peacock pheasants had 2 youngsters. One died after 30 days.
Also bred were the red billed currasows. It leaves 1.1.2 at the zoo.
A malayan crestless firebck was born but it died after 30 days.
A male Satyr Tragopan arrived to join the 2 females. One female was moved away but the other died. That leaves only 1 male.

That’s up to 2005. I now know that Chester has a pair of Satyr Tragopan and has just recieved 2.1. Salvardori’s pheasant. I think that they are for the new orang house.

I could post a list of Galliformes (or any other group of animals) kept at Chester Zoo since 1978 if it would be of use, though it may take me a while to do so. My PC is having an upgrade next week.

Where do you get all the info from? Is it from the zoo library?

I suppose it is in the zoo library. I have annual reports going back to 1962. A stock list has been published since 1978, though this years (for 2006) is included in the NEZS annual report as a CD. A paper copy is available for members who want one, I have requested it.

I think only senior members are entitled to an annual report. See my new thread Chester Zoo stocklist 2006. I have uploaded the pdf files for the animal list.

When did Chester breed the Blyth's tragopans? I read on an annula report that they were bred prior to the 2002 annual report stock take.

1998 when one chick hatched but died before attaining the age of 30 days. This species is very inbred. I'll get round to posting the remaining lists as soon as possible.

Brilliant. Keep them coming. Well not of the pheasants, as you've finished them, but maybe storks? Cranes? Tapirs?

Give me about a week. Since 1978 when the animal inventory was first published the only storks I can think of at Chester are black storks and white storks. American and Malayan tapirs are the only ones ever to have lived at Chester, though in the early 1960s 2 South American tapirs arrived which were very small and were thought to have been the Peruvian subspecies.
