This is unfortunate for the North American captive beluga population. The only sustainable population may be Marineland Canada, which probably will not send any more whales to the breeding consortium.

I'm convinced that Marineland might eventually have to disgorge some of their Beluga's to save money or because of a lawsuit or other goverment action or because the park somehow changes ownership and the new owner(s) decide they want to improve the park's reputation by joining the CAZA and/or AZA.

Why does it need to get out of the Beluga program? There have been 2 births so far, from the same mother. It's not rare that the first calves don't make it. Social media is full of nitwits, who aren't able to comprehend such a concept.

Yeah but all three of them (both calves and the mother) have died young

Off course the calves have died young. They are calves, they are young! It is not extraordinary they have died. The last one had a defect in it's bowels. It was born with it, and there was nothing to be done about it. And the mother had micro tears in her heart. So with other words, a hidden heart problem. There's no reason for GA to stop keeping beluga's, since these are problems are not caused by GA in any way.

I agree. Once again I hope that ML Ontario sends some animals into the AZA population.

Sea lion show and exhibit construction underway

The new sea lion exhibit and show area is currently being constructed in place of the 'Georgia Explorer' area. The 'Georgia Explorer' area had sea turtles, shark and sting ray touch tanks, and a kid play area. Contruction is taking place outside of the aquarium at the corner of Baker St NW and Luckie St NW which is just outside where the exhibit is going to be.

The aquarium is soon to be home to another non-releasable California sea lion from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, bringing their total up to 7.

It seems the aquarium now has striped pajama squid, but unfortunately only viewable on the behind-the-scenes tour.

Puffins and Other Seabirds Coming Soon to Georgia Aquarium The Georgia Aquarium has recently announced that they are going to to feature a new exhibit featuring horned puffins, tufted puffins, common murres, and pigeon guillemots. The new exhibit will be located in the cold water quest gallery. It appears they will get their birds from Alaska SeaLife Center
