Does SF Zoo still exhibit Giant Anteaters in their South America exhibit? What is the status of this species in America? Any successful births?
I saw a constantly pacing giant anteater at the San Francisco Zoo two years ago, and so I'm assuming that they still keep the species. However, births of anteaters aren't overly common, although there have been a few in recent years.
Would i be right in saying the leading zoos in the US for breeding giant anteater are Santa Barbara, Nashville and Jacksonville?
Several zoos have bred them in the past few years. Nashville Zoo imported a whole lot from South American in 2000/2002/2004 and they have a breeding complex of about 12 anteaters. In recent years Wichita, Denver, Palm Beach, Fresno, Nashville, Santa Barbara, and Saint Louis had bred successfully giant anteaters....im sure there are others too. San Francisco Zoo still has them as of January 1, 2007 (according to my records).
Reid Park in Tucson AZ has a really great record for breeding giant anteaters. The Phoenix Zoo has also had several births from their pair.
Sedgwick County Zoo has a pair that had a baby the first year they met. They seems to be a happy couple for years to come.
Dr. Richard Miller private collection has had more twin births in Giant Anteater than anywhere in the world. His collections consist of 22 Giant Anteaters last time i spoke with him. Many places have never heard of his outstanding large collection in Florida.

yes the sfzoo still has one male anteater, angelo. i listened to a keeper chat recently and i think she said that they may aquire a female to breed him again. if i'm wrong i will post again. ... the puente al sur exhibit that houses the anteater, also housed the mountain tapir and capybara. when the tapirs left the anteater and capybara rotated using the field. the capybara sadly passed away a couple weeks ago, so i'm assuming the anteater will now have use of the whole enclosure. leo811 http://gooberssfzoofriends.blogspot.com/2009/06/welcome.html
