Giant otters in Europe

I was curious about the population of giant otters in European zoos. I saw that there was no thread for this yet so I did some research myself. I like to have this thread to list the current population of giant otters in European zoos, discuss about them and get news of them.

There are currently 70 (34,27,9) giant otters living in Europe (of what i found).

If you know any information about them or about the existence of more giant otters in Europe not listed here please tell. If I have any mistake please correct me. Also, if you know the name of any of these giant otters, it is appreciated.

 

Chester - Diego Junior went to Zoo Zlin in 2018. Chester received a male named Taruba (from Zlin) in exchange

 

If I remember correctly, male Pepper at Parc Animalier des Pyrenees arrived from Pairi Daiza recently this year.

 

La Palmyre is refurbishing its past polar bear enclosures to receive giant otters next year.
Munster will welcome this species too in its new area/tropical house called Meranti.
Zürich will be a new holder with the refurbishment and the covering of its area Pantanal.
I was thinking about other news to come but I forget

Do you know if Tarubu really lives alone in Chester?

Pepper did indeed come from Pairi Daiza, He was the last one there.

Thank you for the information. That's very good news for the species! I believe there was a breeding stop a couple of years ago due to too few holders of the giant otter.

Another question: do zoos combine giant otters with other animals? I know that Zoo Leipzig has them with Silvery marmosets and White-faced saki. And AquaZoo Leeuwarden wanted to have them together with Golden-bellied capuchin but in the end they didn't dare to do that.

 

I have found out that the youngsters born at the Budapest Zoo this year did not survive long. So there are 5 less otters.

At the end of March, the 15-year-old giant otter male Saro died in Givskud Zoo (He already was no longer on the last list.). Saro had lost weight in a matter of weeks. That is why it was decided to examine. The examination found that Saro had a lump in his throat, which affected both his ability to eat and his breathing. That is why it was decided not to wake him up from the anesthesia. Autopsy showed that the lump was the size of a plum, analysis has yet to reveal whether it was a form of cancer.

The death of Saro means that changes will take place at the giant otters in the long term. Frieda, Saro's partner, can to spend her old age in Givskud. The youngsters that are still around have all found new places in zoos around the world, and will be moving out this year. One of the young males stays to form a new breeding pair with a new female.

 

Earlier this month, a giant otter male born in Parken Zoo Sweden was moved to Argentina. He will participate in the project for the return of this species to that country, where they became extinct at the end of the 19th century. It is the two-and-a-half-year-old Nanay. In the future he will be released in the Iberá Park together with an female they expect to arrive later. This will make them the second giant otter pair in this project after animals from Hungary and Denmark came to Argentina earlier.

Besides Nanay and the other couple, at least one other giant otter has been living in Argentina for some time. He or she came to Argentina on their own, probably from the Paraguayan or Brazilian Pantanal, via more than a thousand kilometres of rivers.

The giant otter observed in the Impenetrable NP in northern Argentina in the Chaco on the Bermejo river might alternatively be a representative of an hitherto unknown population on this river basin. It is yet to be determined which or how!

 

The young giant otter in Yorkshire Wildlife Park has been given a name: Bonita. She can be seen outside since the 1st of June.
