Four giant otters were born in Leipzig Zoo on June 12. So far everything looks good. Mother Emilia seems relaxed, let the cubs drink enough and cares for them very carefully together with her partner Tacutu. In the coming weeks, the cubs will be cared for by the couple behind the scenes. When they are about four weeks old, the parents will take the cubs outside.

In January this year, giant otter male Akuri died in the New Forest Wildlife Park, leaving twin brother Simuni alone. A few weeks ago female Ibera arrived from Parken Zoo in Sweden to form a pair with Simuni. They will be introduced to each other soon.

No giant otters are currently held in Zoo Dortmund for the time being. The last animal went to Zoo Halle. This is because the outside enclosure of the giant otter will be converted into a temporary home for the sea lions and fur seals, because their own enclosure is being renovated. When the sea lions and fur seals are moved to their new enclosure, Zoo Dortmund will keep giant otters again, which then have a larger and deeper water basin than before.

One newborn in Leipzig died, the remaining three are doing fine. Also male ARNE (*2020) probably died or left the zoo.

Thank you for that information. I already suspected that one of the youngsters from last year was no longer there. What is your source for this information? I haven't been able to find anything about it myself.

At the end of October, 3-year-old giant otter male Salvador moved from Givskud Zoo in Denmark to the São Paulo Aquarium in Brazil. He arrived well in São Paulo and is currently in quarantine. In the future he will be paired with an already present female.

In Tierpark Cottbus, the predator house is being renovated. After this renovation, a number of new species, including the giant otter, will be on display here. The renovation should be finished in the summer of 2022.

With Tierpark Cottbus, there will be at least four new holders for the giant otter in the coming years. These are:

    - Zoo de La Palmyre: spring? 2022
    - Tierpark Cottbus: summer 2022
    - Allwetterzoo Münster: autumn 2022
    - Zoo Zürich: 2025

Zoo Schwerin, the current studbook holder, would also like to keep giant otters, but I have not seen this confirmed anywhere yet.

@MennoPebesma La Palmyre already received a male from Doué and is now off-show until the Zoo finish the works in the enclosure. I suppose it will be ready for spring from the pictures I saw.

According to this instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/CYbPFNqoz_l/), the male Iquitos is still at Zoo de Doué la Fontaine, and will get a new partner soon. So unless there was another male there, which to my knowledge there is not, the male cannot have come from Doué.

From Givskud Zoo, female giant otter Brazilia will soon leave for Zoo de La Palmyre. At the moment she is being trained to get used to the transport box. In Palmyre, she will be paired with a young male to become a new breeding pair.
