They have 1 male Zabulu and 1 female Rukiya. Kiri died in May 2003 after an injury to her leg. There old female Kay died about a year ago. She just collapsed one day in the paddock. Just before Christmas they sent Kay's last calf Ntombi and Rukiya's first surviving calf Forrest off to Australia. They are both in quarentine at present at Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo NSW. Once quarentine is over Forrest will go to Australia Zoo in Queensland and Ntombi will stay at Western Plains. Calf's born in last 7 years are.... Kiri..... Do you mean the young male Forrest? He had a large lump on his chest that was removed several months before his move to Australia. It was found to be nothing serious.
Both females have the same mother, born at the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii in 1980 Kiri (f) born 22.09.1984 at Auckland Zoo - her father was also born at Auckland Zoo Kay (f) born 19.09.1986 at Auckland Zoo - her father was born at the Honolulu Zoo
Can someone please tell me what the future plans are for Auckland Zoo's giraffe? Will they be importing any more females from Australia or are they just going to keep the current 1:1? Thanks
Another male, they really need a female. Auckland will be receiving another giraffe from Monarto soon as well. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10630682
