    GCA PRESS RELEASE

From an e-mail newsletter from GCA I received today:

We are extremely excited to share with all of you a press release that went out last week regarding some great changes at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. The GCA is now Cleveland owned. After two successful years of operation, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is now under the ownership of Jacobs Entertainment, Inc.

This ownership change means immediate improvements to the facility like our Ohio Lakes and River exhibits along with our brand new Coldwater exhibits and Giant Pacific Octopus. Jacobs Entertainment and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium look forward to continuing these improvements and encourage all of you to visit and see for yourselves these changes and the vision of where the Aquarium is heading.

Please see below the official press release regarding this news.

Cleveland, Ohio —May 27, 2014—Families looking for something new to do this summer might want to revisit the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. That’s because the aquarium has completed a major upgrade to the Ohio Lakes & Rivers exhibit, making it look and feel like entering a forest with babbling brooks and waterfalls. The exhibit features aquatic life found in Lake Erie and our local rivers, along with interactive activities to teach kids about the importance of taking care of our water resources. New reptile exhibits include salamanders, newts and snakes. And turtle lovers will find an expanded exhibit filled with native turtles along with information on everything they would want to know about the anatomy of the turtle. In another gallery of the aquarium, guests will discover a new Giant Pacific Octopus who now calls Cleveland home.

There’s another new change at the aquarium that guests won’t see – new ownership. After two successful years of operation, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is now under the ownership of Jacobs Entertainment, Inc., which owns and operates the Nautica complex. Jacobs purchased the aquarium from New Zealand-based Marinescape NZ Ltd, the firm that designed and developed the aquarium. For aquarium guests, the ownership change means immediate improvements to the facility like the Ohio Lakes & Rivers exhibit described above. It also brings a new vision for continued expansion. In addition, the purchase allows Jacobs to fully integrate the aquarium into its other entertainment offerings in The Flats, including the Nautica Queen, Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica, and Windows on the River.

“There is great potential in the aquarium and in the synergies available on the West Bank,” said Pat McKinley, Executive Vice President of Jacobs Investments. “We are excited to be part of the aquarium and are committed to its continued success.”

“We see oceans of possibilities for enhancing the guest’s experience,” said Tami Brown, General Manager of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. “From new marine life and interactive exhibits to a complete nautical visit at the FirstEnergy Powerhouse complex, there are now more ways to create the ultimate entertainment destination for families in Northeast Ohio and beyond.”

The Aquarium does a nice job with the space it is in and barring some major investment I don't see the space being added to at all. It's collection is nice and its well done and they do a good job with trying to market it to Cleveland.

As renovations come to an end, the aquarium has just added a red-footed tortoise and their first bird species, the aracari.

I asked Greater Cleveland Aquarium about their recent additions. There response is below:

We’re very excited about the progress in the Tropical Forest Gallery. We have, as you’ve noticed, already welcomed an Argentine black and white tegu, curl-crested aracaris and a red-footed tortoise. In the not-to-distant future you’ll see poison dart frogs in the cylinder exhibit as well as several species in the far right “walk-in” portion of the aviary.

Is there anyone who has been recently and is able to confirm some things? I think they’re down to three shark species - sand tiger, Atlantic nurse, and blacknose - but I have found references as late as 2020 to sandbar and brownbanded bamboo sharks. Anyone know if they’re still there?
