The zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe calf to its enclosures this morning. Ian Adams, the zoo’s Animal Collection Manager, found the calf as a part of his usual morning round. “I just did my first morning check and there she was,” he said. The mother, Tuna, was in great shape and showing “all the signs of being healthy”. The young calf is a girl, which has left zoo staff delighted. “It’s a wee girl, which is excellent,” Mr Adams said, “that’s a real bonus, getting a female.” With a girl on side, Orana Park could have a mother to breed and live at the park for 25 years. The youngling hasn’t been named yet, as the zoo is giving naming rights away through a local competition. But after 14 months in making, the birth was timed perfectly for the end of year crowds. “It’s a good time to have a baby giraffe, just before Christmas time,” Adams says. Great to hear this so the last 3 calfs to be born in NZ have been female looking promising for the breeding program or thoe one died I hope that this one survives good job Tunu and my big boy harold.
