Hi all. I've been lurking about the site for a few months now and have decided to sign up. My wife and I have visited a few different zoos around the UK, and the tiergarten in Vienna when we were there a few years ago. I'm currently building a version of Chester Zoo inside the game Planet Zoo which is what I've been visiting the site for more recently.
Welcome to ZooChat! Chester is my local zoo so I would be very interested to see your creation in Planet Zoo.
Ooh, I've just posted some pictures into the Planet Zoo forum here. I have got Youtube videos but don't think I can post them. Some of the stuff I've built I have also uploaded to the Steam Workshop, so if you have the game you can download and use them for yourself, too.
Glad you found us. Chester Zoo (which I have been to and liked) generates perhaps more discussion on this site than any other single zoo.
That's kind of good to hear. I've only ever been to Chester once and it was a few years ago. It was certainly the best zoo I've been to in the UK, though I'm far from an aficionado. My favourite zoo is the Tiergarten Schonbrunn in Vienna. Could've spent hours watching the polar bears there. Biggest disappointment was going to Barcelona zoo last year, having been previously when I was a kid.
Welcome to Zoochat! Were the polar bears in their newish enclosure or still in the old one! You'll be glad to hear that the Tiergarten Schoenbrunn won the Zoochat Cup this year!
It was october 2015 so I suspect this must have been the new enclosure. It had a deep plunge pool that one of the bears was playing around in with a bucket, sticking its head in, then diving down and letting the bucket bob to the surface. You could walk down into a cavern type area and look into the plunge pool. That doesn't surprise me, going by my experience. I seem to remember the elephant house being quite a vast structure, but I can't find any interipr images of it on here that ring a bell.
Interesting - it didn't look like this? There was elevated viewing behind that from what I can remember and the outdoors extended off to the left of the house, at least from what I can remember in early 2019. Although I've just realised I've given you a bit of misinformation. Bronx zoo won the Zoochat Cup but Vienna came in as a close second , which was still a very close result given the best 32 zoos in the world were competing. San Diego, Prague and Berlin were eliminated early on.
Well that's the thing, I don't think it did, but having seen that photograph, I'm doubting myself. I remember it as being a very large, bright space with more glass in the roof. The exterior photographs in the gallery look as I remember, though, so if this is the interior of that I must be wrong.
