Great site! I live in the Philippines and have a mini aviary/zoo. I keep Philippine parrots, pigeons and hornbills. I had near success of breeding the Philippine Blue-naped parrot. I also have a BLUE mutation of Philippine Hanging Parrot (Luzon race).
Hello Spayrow welcome to the board What other species do you keep? The more photos you can post the better. What are the local laws about keeping captive wildlife and do you need special permits?
Rufuos hornbills (Luzon race) Tarictic Hornbill (Luzon race). Last breeding season, my tarictic hornbill pair nearly laid their first clutch, unfortunately the nestbox has been destroyed when they begun nesting. I will replace the nestbox next breeding season and hope that they will have their first clutch. I raised them since they were chicks so they grew up tamed. I have also recorded their mating rituals.
I have several endemic species of parrots, pigeons and hornbills. I have a CWR which makes me legal to keep Philippine birds. CWR stands for Certificate of Wildlife Registration. My pets are registered in the DENR or the Department of Natural Resources which is the department of our government whose function is to manage our natural resources. I want to concentrate in breeding our Philippine birds specially our native parrots. I hope I can contribute also to this site in my own little way. Thank you.
Hello spayrow, It is great to finally have someone from SE and Eastern Asia on the forum. Great to have you on board and hope you can tell us much about your own birds and wildlife in general on the Phillipines. I am planning to visit the Phillipines next year and would love to learn more about opportunities for nature watching, national parks and eco-tourism. Surely, also to visit the tribal areas and meet the people that still reside in the rainforests. I guess my itenary would be Cebu, Luzon, Negros, Mindoro, Mindanao, Panay, Leyte and perhaps the Western Visayas ... if I can make it there. Would hope you can also give us some details about the Avilon Zoo, which I have heard is the best zoological establishment in the Phillipines next to the several breeding centers for rare Phillipiine wildlife (on Negros, Panay et al). Please tell us what other birds you have - save for the wonderful hornbills and parrots! Any Columba species? You can post in the Asia thread on Phillipine wildlife. Cheers,
Thank you for the warm welcome jelle You're correct, Avilon zoo is the best zoo to see in the Philippines. Lot's of endemic species. Palawan is the best place to see followed by Mindanao and Luzon. I have some pairs of bleeding heart pigeons.
Really i thought they were very rare over there? Australia has a large population of them and they can be obtained relitivly easily
They are very rare now, unlike 10 yrs. ago. Especially the Mindanao, Mindoro and Negros Bleeding Hearts. The only bleeding heart in my possession is the Luzon bleeding heart. Even illegal pet traders are getting a hard time obtaining this animal. The Bird park in my place is very successful in breeding Luzon bleeding heart pigeons.
yeah! Especially among Filipino Martial Artists. Do u play Eskrima? I hate to admit this but my hornbills came from the wild. I acquired them a few years back. But my purpose is not to display them but to have captive breeding populations.
No I don't, I've never done any martial arts in a group, I read a lot about it though I sometimes go in my back yard and parices Tai chi and eskrima, I don't know why but this helps me with my dancing, I hope in future your hornbill breeding program will be very successful,
