Sorry to see the addax and addra gazelle go but I hope I can visit the zoo sometime soon and see the new grasslands exhibit.

Sent 3 endangered species out the door because they "didn't fit the geographic theme of the exhibit." A solid conservation move right there...

You'd think, given the fact that they spent $70 million on that glitzy new area, they could have spared the expense of fitting a few more of these hoofstock into the plan.

I didn't think of it that way. That is a little disheartening.

Another year, another $20 million spent at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. The question is soon going to be not "is this one of the 3 best zoos in America?" and instead will be "is this one of the top 5 zoos on the planet?"

That fortunately does not only on money and seeing the pictures from a rather underwhelming Madagascar exhibit and also far from optimal enclosures in both the desert dome and the jungle building, they have a lot of work to do still.

This is good. Get some more cats out of that horrific Cat Complex. What is the eventual plan for that building?

According to the master plan, it is planned to be demolished and replaced with an "Equatorial Africa" Exhibit.

What species does the master plan suggest would go in the Equatorial Africa section? Okapis? Hippos? Bonobos? They already have a modern gorilla complex, so presumably they would not be part of the new development.

The species list is rather excellent, but the concept art is not at all inspiring, and this sentence even less so:

" the zoo chose Asian architecture and themes, borrowed from photos of the region."

The suggested species are okapi, bongo, and red river hogs, incorporating the existing gorilla exhibit in for a more "cohesive" theme.

Agreed, but the "new regime" at Omaha is consistently producing far superior exhibits than in the past, particularly from an animal welfare perspective. Asian Highlands is very promising.

That is good to hear, but my main point was that it is a bit too preliminary to exclaim Omaha is one of the top five zoos on the planet...
