So did anyone watch Britain's Polar Bear Cub tonight? Predictably the cub only appeared in the last 10 minutes or so, but despite that I thought it was an excellent programme showing the high and low points of captive breeding attempts. I also enjoyed the brief segment on how the way bears are kept in zoos has changed over the years with some archive footage of Brumas. Overall I thought it was really enjoyable - a good mix of the aww factor and a serious documentary, and I hope Highland Wildlife Park do really well off the back of it!

I watched too and thought it was fab. I really liked that it focused on the work and effort that goes into trying to make breeding successful rather than just the end product.

I bet they were all kicking themselves that they didn't put the CCTV camera back in the den this winter - it would have improved the show considerably.

Perhaps it also goes to prove that sometimes it is best just to let nature take its course.

Access to Viktorias enclosure remains closed to the public. But T Shirts with a picture of the bear cub are available to order !

Wonder when the enclosure will become accessible to the public again.

I'm sure they originally said around the end of March, probably in time for Easter holiday

Deffo not going to be open for Easter, I'm sure of that. I rang up and asked last week as was planning a couple of days up there next week, and they advised that it was unlikely her enclosure would be open to the public next week.

Ah, thanks for that. I was mulling over taking a trip up there before starting a new job. Hopefully work will take me up that way before the summer holidays.

Do bears crap in the woods? (Sorry, couldn't resist!) Yes please!

I bet the park will be seriously busy over the Easter school holidays!

Unlike the people who were turned away but had pre-booked -if true that's really poor customer service or, at the least, they completely under-estimated the popularity of a Polar Bear cub*. Either way, again if true, they need to make amends.

    * to be fair they haven't much recent history to go on

Pretty sure they’ll have an arrangement in place to make up for it - something like a free return on another day - as you say, they’ll have known that it would up their visitor numbers for sure, but they probably didn’t realise by quite how much.
