Who has an idea for a animal that can go together with hippos(Hippopotamus amphibius)? Or know any mixed enclosures existing? It would really help me out for a hippo enclosure.

I think that one zoo kept hoof stock with hippos. It was fine until one of the hoof stock fell into the pool. The hippos were being territorial...

On a more serious note, fishes like Tilapia are commonly used to clean the hippo poop (eg San Diego) .

I don't normally read the fantasy zoo threads but just happened to notice this one.

    I have seen:-

(West) Berlin Zoo:- hippos and nyala
    Cologne Zoo:- hippos and sitatunga
Basle Zoo:- hippos and Grant's zebra (There was an incident here whereby a hippo killed a zebra)

In Basel the hippo are now kept separate from the Grant's zebra and ostrich.

Bussolengo-Verona keeps hippo mixed with white rhino and nyala!

Best (!?) combination I have seen: hippos, white rhino, zebra, baboons and black bears. This at the idiosyncratic Madrid Safari Park (about which there is an article in the latest edition of Zoo Grapevine).

While the exhibit is shared with Wolf's Guenon, I believe he is referring to the Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus Amphibius) while Wolf's Guenon share with Pygmy Hippo (Choeropsis liberiensis). It is a great exhibit though.

Well they're smaller and generally less aggressive than River Hippos ( River Hippos kill the most humans out of every mammal in Africa except mosquitos). That said, they have sharp teeth and can deliver bites. I'd say pairing them with most monkeys would be fine as Hippos can't climb trees:p

Mosquitoes aren't mammals. I think that humans kill more humans in Africa than river hippos do.

Whoops! Misread my own post and thought I said animals not mammals:(. Of course Humans kill more than Hippos but they're still pretty dangerous.

It is interesting to note, though, that pygmy hippos eating monkeys has been documented; pygmy hippos in Calcutta Zoo were recorded as killing and eating rhesus macaques......

Disney's Animal Kingdom has hippos mixed with flamingos and pelicans. I wouldn't chance mixing them with other hoofstock. They are territorial and aggressive.
