For those of you with at least a passing curiosity regarding the history of Whipsnade, there are now some great aerial photos available to view on the Britain from Above site: Whipsnade search results | Britain from Above This site was mentioned by one of the moderators here a couple of years back, but, at the time, the range of photos was much more limited geographically. However, currently there are some 65 shots of the Whipsnade area, spanning the years from 1927 (open fields and woodland), through 1931/1932 (including construction of the chalk lion), up to 1948/1951. There are several shots of the oft-mentioned pits on the edge of the escarpment. It's certainly a fascinating read, although it's recommended that you register on the site to get the full benefit: this will let you zoom into the photos, many of which are very detailed, even allowing individual (large) animals to be seen in some cases. Registering also allows you to 'pin' information to the images (eg. labelling landmarks, items of interest etc.).
