A female Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra was born at 2:00 A.M. on June 2nd. Born to parents Ziggy and Ziva. Ziva has been a great first mother. The baby doesn’t have a name but will be on exhibit 10-2 depending on the baby. The birth was live broadcasted on the Facebook page this morning.

The Zoo is mourning the loss of Amur Tiger Kazek. Kazek was 14 and just shy off his 15th birthday. Kazek was the cat who sired the 2009 litter. Kazek died after dealing with inflammatory Bowell disease for 10 years. Cila, the female tiger at the zoo, is doing ok after learning of the death. Kazek will be greatly missed.

Hogle Zoo tiger Kazek dies one month short of 15th birthday

This is so great! I will be making my first visit to this zoo at the end of September, which means the sand cats will be just under four months old. I would LOVE to photograph baby sand cats.

EDIT 1 - I just clicked on the article that says the kittens are already five weeks old, so they will be around six months old when I visit.

EDIT 2 - This birth is highly significant as for the past few years only one US facility (Exotic Feline Breeding Compound) has successfully bred sand cats.

As a cat lover who will be visiting in one month, this is great news. However the article has a couple major errors. It says there are about 60 Amur leopards remaining in the wild in China and Mongolia. Ummm, no, they are all in Russia. And it says black-footed cats are the smallest cats in the world. Ummm, no, they are the second smallest (rusty spotted cats are the smallest).
