I just wondered how many employees in total major zoos like San Diego, Berlin and Singapore have? 200-300? And how many of those are animal care staff? How many employees do your local or favourite zoo have? What is the name of the zoo in the world with most employees? Just wondering....
I read somewhere in my monthly 'World of Animals' magazine that San Diego Zoo has 1500 staff (including volunteers), in summer and 1000 staff in winter.
Some of this information is available in the AZA Membership Directory. Probably also through EAZA and WAZA For example: San Diego Zoo - 1,500 full time employees (it is not clear whether that includes the wildlife park and SDGlobal. I suspect it does) Henry Doorly Zoo - 250 full time Saint Louis Zoo - 300 full time Indianapolis Zoo - 202 full time Woodland Park Zoo - 235 full time
Prague zoo - 229 employees in total/ of them 95 are animal keepers Dvůr Králové - 165/57 - the first number includes also their hotel staff Zlín-Lešná - 83/31 Jihlava - 52/19 Ostrava - 102/42 Bratislava - 69/26 These numbers are average numbers of all their staff in year 2015, including part-timers and apprentices.
Burgers' guide says they have 45 zookeepers plus twenty week-end-forces, but that's just the keepers. The KMDA (the zoos of Antwerp, Planckendael and the Serpentarium in Blankenberge) has something around 350 employees.
