    Yes Glyn,
But shouldn't they try and have a MAIN rhino that if anyone asked about rhinos they would just go straight to it?

I'm saying that a Zoo should try to have a main rhino species. The one they have been working with the longest. Then they could try adding more rhino species. Chester plans to introduce whites in about 5-10 years.

I think you are trying to say, A zoo would be better off trying to promote a species as a FLAGSHIP species to raise awareness of other species of rhino, thats how i am understaning what you are saying, is thst right?.

Almost, Well yes . The zoo should have more of their FLAGSHIP rhino then their normal rhino. Does that make sense?

Well, I'll give you an example.

Chester zoo has kept and bred black rhinos for over 50 years. They have hadf real sucess and have built a new house for them in a style of an African hut. This is Chester's main rhino species

Recently chester recieved a male indian rhino called patna from Berlin he lives with blackbuck and burmese brow antlered deer. This is chester's secondary rhino species.

They work more with black rhinos, with conservation projects in Kenya but hold Indian rhinos. Does that make sense now? If it doesn't I don't know what i'll do!!

mmm. Not sure I'd describe Chester's fifty years of keeping Black Rhino as a real success... They have only bred about six calves during that time, with extremely long periods with no births at all, despite having several males and females at all timers.

Well they hand reared Emma. She had a pig as a friend. It was sooo cute. It was in a zoo magazine.

Yes, that's great but look at the bigger picture. Emma died at Whipsnade without producing any calves at all. Fortunately her parents(Parky & Esther) each have one other descendant, (from matings with different partners) otherwise their genes wouldn't be represented at all.

Yes. I think he was obtained as 'new blood' to breed with the two younger females(Kitani and ?) who live with him in the 'Tsavo experience'. Those two females were both fathered by Quinto's but the other females at Chester aren't related to him. Its sad too they lost the female Pangani as she was a proven breeder

Not that long ago- within the last couple of years.. There was a TV programme which showed Quinto at Whipsnade being darted for his return transport to Chester- Pangani was alive then as it also showed her at Chester and also Quinto being moved into the adjacent paddock to her as he hadn't seen her for many years- the long period he was at Whipsnade. The plan was for them to be reunited for further breeding. Next thing I heard she'd died- I don't know what happened....

No. She and Quinto arrived together as a young pair. So she was the same age as him. I don't know how old he is but he's not ancient.
